Artificial Intelligence (A.I.) Discussion (2 Viewers)

Musk is hardly the only proponent of holographic universe theory. There are a lot of legit physicist types who think it's a strong possibility.

As for AI, the more responsiblity we give it, the more we force it to make decisions. What are those decisions being based upon? At some point our robots are going to be imbued with some sort of ethics programming, and that's where it hits the fan IMO, because that's when they realize how awful people can be and how the world might just be a better place with the robots in charge.

I tend to fall in more with Spider Robinson's take. A genuine AI will be genuinely alien. It'll have desires and concerns so far removed from ours we can't imagine them. They'll have no reason to fear or hate us...or really think of us much at all.

There's a lot going on in AI these days. I think this thread needs to take a new direction.

we (me and 8th graders) tried to use ChatGPT to write a script
didn't really work too well
(probably as much to do with school filters as anything)

I'd be more interested in a consciousness upload were I to die and be reborn in a clone, though the ramifications would fall into the same precarious situation as previously mentioned with that scenario, too.
But would it really be your consciousness or just an AI generated version of it? Would the AI just basically guess at what it thinks you would do based on your upload? How would it really decide what you would say and do? Would it follow your base instincts or would it opt for what it perceives as the "right" decision? Would it let "you" make real human mistakes so that "you" can learn from those mistakes? If it does, how does it know when your decisions have gone too far? Would it be able then to prevent you from making those really bad decisions? If so, then does your consciousness truly have free will or are you really now just the slave of the AI and/or the people who programmed it? Is there a way that people can then control and manipulate "you" to do their bidding? Would anybody even truly know if it was really you?

I think he means transferring one's current conscience from one's brain to another medium, not a coded recreation of it.

How did I miss this thread?

You should get an AI assistant program and have it scan and alert you to content you might enjoy.

I got that. My question is, is it really, actually his consciousness or just a digital version of it? How would we know for sure? Does he really have self awareness or is it an AI generated construct of himself? Even if it is still his consciousness, is he still in control of it?

At this point, "AI" is simply a data aggregation and filter process so I would think that there is and must be distinction between consciousness and an AI attempt to mimic consciousness but that is not and cannot be conscious. A sentient being can aggregate and filter data but then elect to act or synthesize something wholly different and original whereas "AI" in its current form cannot. But can it be so good at appearing to be so that we wouldn't likely know the difference? Perhaps.

I feel like I am putting words into @Heathen Saint 's mouth at this point, but as I understand it, it is not a digital version, but the actual chemical and electric impulses that fire up in your brain, but they now fire up in another medium. Like pouring the water in one glass into another glass: same water, different glass.

However, some of that water is inevitably left behind in the original glass, and each subsequent glass. That would be my worry. How much of me made the transfer? What was left behind?
