We can't plug all of our holes in one year, so we should start accumulating talent. Our quarterback of the future is not on the roster, but we can at least start building to set that person up to succeed when we get him. I cut out Moyock's comments on the quarterbacks because I assume we're not taking one. Although, I kind of like the idea of taking the kid from Bama and letting him sit. If not, wait until next year. we don't have to plug all our holes in one year.
I get why you did but it's applicable to us because we're a year or so away from drafting one. Like you said we need to start accumulating talent. That way when we draft one we have the right infrastructure in place for them to be successful.

If you drafted Dart at 9 you'd be setting him up to fail. No consistent run game to support him and no contested catch WR/TE to bail him out on 3rd downs and the red zone. Get those in place and maybe the next guy has a chance.

Here are the last 6 first round pick TEs:
Brock Bowers
T.J Hockenson
Kyle Pitts
Noah Fant
Hayden Hurst
Coming out of college, where would Tyler Warren rank in this list?

Here are the last 6 first round RBs:
Bijan Robinson
Jahmyr Gibbs
Najee Harris
Travis Etienne
Clyde Edwards-Helaire
Josh Jacobs
Coming out of college, where would Jeanty rank on this list?

Warren? Around Pitts.
Jeanty? Above them all.

I would put Warren, behind Bowers and Pitts and probably just above the other 4.

I would put Jeanty about even with Robinson on top of the list no question.

And that's the decider for me. If Im choosing between adding the best RB in about 6 years versus the 3rd best TE in that time span, I HAVE to go with the class leading player. I dont care what the biggest need is today. I dont want to look back in 2 years and think I took Noah Fant over Saquan Barkley.

That's fair, if I gave it more thought i'd prob go bowers, pitts, then warren or hock as 3a or 3b.

For RB Bijan is close to gun to my head and I had to pick, Jeanty is 1a for me. He's a better prospect to me, just how I feel. Jeanty is the best prospect since Saquon and arguably just as good. We will see.

Warren is a great player, but talent wise, like pure football player, Jeanty is better. Now that doesn't mean he will be more effective, or make us better.

Why did you choose to use the term elite for TE and not for RB?
I think Jeanty will be a really good back. Will he be elite? I'm not sure. Depends on where he lands. Even if he is, the shelf life for an elite TE is much longer than it is for a RB. Every year there aren't many guys who become elite at their positions. I think Warren can be. I'm just not sold that Jeanty will reach that level on the pros. Too easy to stack the box and take him out. Plus the injury risks on RBs is usually greater.

A big reason Hock went top 10 is because he was one of the most polished all around TEs to come out in a long time. He showed in college he could be a true TE and receiver at a high level. Warren's much more proven as a receiver and also a capable blocker. Not to say he isn't good as a blocker, but his size is probably doing him more favors than what he did in college.

I know he's a fan favorite on here, but Jeanty truly is a special player. I'd say Bijan had a better case coming out simply because he was called on to do a lot more at Texas than Jeanty did at Boise. Bijan rushed, caught, and blocked at Texas at a high level and all you had to do was watch the games. When I saw all the mocks that had him falling to the 20's in that draft I scoffed. He was always a top 10 guy that maybe could've fell to mid round.

Jeanty is the same type of talent. There isn't much more he could've proved as a rusher. And watching every Boise game that was televised here, he was a significant factor in pass blocking for that team this year. Only "question mark", if you can call it that is his receiving ability. He just wasn't put in the position to catch many balls, but when he did he always looked pretty sure handed and showed what he could do in space.

Warren would be a nice pick to me, even at 9. But both available, assuming higher value players aren't available, Jeanty's gotta be the guy between the two.

Watching the first few Cowboys games of 2022, it seems like TE will be a key need this offseason with both Hill and Moreau coming off knee injuries and Johnson a free agent. Moore runs a lot of two TE sets, and also likes to move his TE around the formation to create mismatches. I’ve seen quite a few plays where he’ll have a TE split out as an X receiver in 3x1 sets (with 3WR on the strong side), and that likely won’t be effective without a decent receiving threat at the TE position. He also runs plenty of twin WR sets with two TE opposite. I know with the Eagles he ran more balanced formations to isolate their two receivers, but we don’t have those guys.

I don’t think TE1 needs to be a mauler in the run game since it seems like Moore prefers to run zone weak side. Some of the better strong side runs have been duo and crack toss, where the TE is getting a favorable angle on their defender and aren’t being asked to move guys.

All that said, it may be worth bringing Johnson back to have a healthy veteran at the position (and reduce his cap hit), and then taking Warren over Jeanty. Pick #9 seems rich for a TE, but Jeanty and Warren were the only two choices in this thread.
Living in Cowboys country and watching games because I had to, yes, Moore loves using TE's in his offense. As said, 2 TE sets aren't unusual. We'll need to pickup at least one capable/reliable TE who is a pass catching type of TE with solid hands. Used a ton on 3rd down conversions and red zone packages.

Is no one concerned about the level of competition that Jeanty played against? I mean GA Southern and Portland St are not exactly SEC schools

I don't think there is a question about his receiving ability. In 2023 he had 43rec for 569 yards and 5 TDs, that's 47 yards per game receiving.

He was going for a the rushing record this season, it made sense to just have him run the ball and go for the record.

Is no one concerned about Jeanty's performance against PSU?

For all the crying on this forum about taking small school players high, I would think that might raise a red flag.

Maybe it's just because I like Warren better. He'd make our O dynamic from day one.
I want to stop drafting small school guys for a bit and go with big school guys that regularly play tougher competition. Those small school guys are great gambles when your team is good and terrible choices when you can't afford to miss. I'm not saying Jeanty is going to be a miss, but with our best position of depth being RB and needing so many other things, it's not worth the risk.

Neither. Fix the trenches first.

The Saints have been fixing the trenches for the past 7 years. Like any position, drafting lineman in the first round only works if the lineman is worth drafting with your first round pick. So indiscriminately saying "fix the trenches" is pointless and even harmful to the team, if there's not a player worth picking there with the 9th pick.
