B & G scrimmage (5 Viewers)

More fumbles from Bell...

I do not want him on the field for us.

This post makes it sound as if your prediction has come true when, in fact, it has not. Perhaps a more apporpriate way to have stated it is that today's practice only serves to strengthen your feeling that stopping the run might be a bugaboo this season. This was a practice, not a season.

Yes ma'am.

"With Darren Sharper on the sidelines, S Usama Young looked promising. He filled holes quickly against the run, immediately closed on a few screens – once coming in hot to put a loud pop on Thomas – and earned consistent praise from defensive backs coach Dennis Allen for his efforts. Young also made a quick play in coverage to stop Shockey well short of a first down, with the fiery tight end slamming the ball to the turf. " From NOS.com B&G article linked above.

Gotta like the sound of that. Good for UY, a year late, IMO, but rather late than never.

Oh hell yeah.. the Saints future FS just breakin' it in!

PS- and also a good move for the f/o to not give up on him and bury him on the depth chart as a CB, or worse yet cut him, but rather give hime a chance to shine in an area where he is looking more and more natural.

NWSaint.

That part of the report stuck out to me to, Usama is an aggresive corner, I think this change to Safety is what is going to get the most out of his ability, he can support the run and has the speed to defend sideline to sideline as a FS...he may be a surprise starter before the year is out.

And I dont think any of us would be surprised at that.

nice to see Jeff Charleston with a fumble recovery and a pass deflection that wound up getting picked off

Barring injury to Sharper, I'd be absoluely shocked if Young starts at any point. I like the kid, but he's been absolutely terrible on the field for us. Maybe the position change will help, but I personally doubt it.

Now... I'm a fan of Mike Bell, and I think he's a really tough runner, but if he keeps putting the ball on the turf, He needs to ride the pine. HOLD ONTO THE DARN BALL MIKE!

I was also intrigued by the fact that they said Devery Henderson had a really nice punt return!

Ive been telling everyone from the beginning, Mike Bell has fumbling problems, amongst a lot of other things. I like the guy, love his story coming into Denver, when he made the team it was a feel good story akin to the beer man, but the guy couldnt cut it on arguably the easiest place for a running back to succeed. People really need to temper they're expectations of this guy.

I don't really think you can judge the run D just yet. Wait till they get into real game action.

Exactly. The hardest thing to judge during TC and scrimmages is run D. There was no tackling in this scrimmage.

Calm down people. It might suck during pre-season gams and we still won't know yet.

The strength of the run D truly won't be known until September 13th and beyond.

In 2006 we had the 11th ranked defense.

We had the number 3 pass defense.

We also had the 23rd ranked rush defense.

Can someone remind me how that season went?

Get that rush D up in the teens and your looking at a dominant team.

The drive was highlighted by a 26-yard completion to tight end Jeremy Shockey on third-and-10

I hope it was an all out blitz and not a random 08 Saints D play, anyone got some info on that?

While fun to listen to, today's scrimmage doesn't really tell us much about the team other than what numbers people will be wearing this year.

Things that had to be done after last year:

1) Get a more aggressive Defensive scheme.
2) Balance the offense with more than 40% running plays.
3) Find an inside runner that can move the pile, especially on 3rd-and-short, and make defenses respect the run from play-to-play.
4) Use Reggie more like the utility player he was in 2006.
5) Stay healthy.

We probably did #1 based on the coach we hired. #2, 3, and 4 won't be discovered until we get into the real games. We won't know about #5 until the playoffs start and we see who's suiting up.
