Bears hire Ben Johnson as HC to 13M/yr; Dennis Allen is expected to become Bears DC, Johnson is heavily pursuing Rizzi to be STC (65 Viewers)

This is absolutely insane coming from a Saints fan.

This team has been lead by our defense for years.

DA might be a poor HC but he's an elite DC.

The cracks were starting to show in DA's defense. He was elite in the era of pocket passing QB's. In this new era of more mobile and scrambling QB's he'll struggle. We've seen it whenever we faced a nobody QB who would run when his first read wasn't open.

The good thing for him is McCarthy/Darnold, Love, and Goff are not thought of being very mobile or great scramblers so maybe it's the right division to land in.

Where coaches and players go to die
The Bears have a strong nucleus. With Johnson on to develop the QB and the young talent and Allen running just the D, I think the Bears become a contender this coming season or next.

It's also the fact our defense is just getting older. Demario, Cam, Mathieu were/are all well past their primes and outside of them it's all a bunch of JAGs.

Our complete lack of talent on defense is alarming. The Bears have significantly more talent and should have a great defense for DA to thrive.

I'm not talking about this year though. How many years have we struggled against mobile QB's? It's been a running joke that we're going to do bad against a rookie/backup QB.

Sure but almost all teams struggle against running QBs especially if you play mostly man defense.

It's also confirmation bias in the sense we only remember the games where running/rookie QBs play well against us and never the opposite.

I’m sure that this is a contrarian view, but I don’t think Ben Johnson will be a good head coach. The Lions have always been my second team, and I’ve watched all their games over the last few years. They live and die with Dan Campbell…he’s the main driver and motivator in that organization. Ben Johnson reminds me a lot of DA…you don’t see him leading and motivating on the sidelines. He seems quite detached from the players. He may be a great offensive innovator, but without a Dan Campbell around, I’m doubting his abilities to lead a team. Pair him with DA and it seems like you’ve got two betas at the top of the organization.

All defenses struggle against mobile QBs. It's why everybody wants one on their team.

Yep. I made this point to someone earlier today when picking my son up from a friend’s house whose dad is a Commanders fan. He said he’s afraid because they struggle against running QBs, and I told him the same thing you said.

They’re almost ALWAYS tough.

The QBs in this draft aren't worth trading up for. But you are right they need to be willing to do it when the opportunity is there and they haven't been.

Next year would if we don't find a guy before then.

I'm 100% on board, build the foundation and supporting cast in 2025, if we don't find a QB, go get one in the 2026 draft.
