Best New Orleans Area Restaurants. Your opinions? (2 Viewers)

I take issue with "best" but otherwise I'll take a shot at a few of these. Keep in mind, I don't keep up with the restaurant stuff like I used to - it has gotten super-expensive and I cook a lot these days. Omitting categories I usually cook myself or don't eat out much

  • Best Seafood?
GW Fins for fancy. Keep in mind I can't eat crawfish anymore (allergy). Station 6 (Bucktown) is good, as is NO Food and Spirits across the street.
  • Best American food?
That's not otherwise listed? I pick tacoes. (Also, for lack of a better place to put it - try Rosedale - Lakeview)
  • Best Burgers?
Company burger (Freret)
  • Best PoBoys?
Depends on your taste, but I'm a Parkway guy. Hot sausage patty, dressed add cheddar, extra pickles. Oysters ($$$) on Wednesday are worth it for a treat. Closes at 6 and on Mon (maybe Tues) these days. My fave roast beef place closed and I haven't found a replacement yet.
  • Best BBQ?
Blue Oak, Carrollton, but has also gotten pricey. Good bar though.
  • Best Thai?
Thai'd Up. Gentilly Blvd. It's tiny - order takeout early or get a reservation
  • Best Steakhouse?
Prob Mr Johns. Crescent City for experience, though not the best steak. Manale's (New Orleans Italian) has a surprisingly good steak
  • Best Bakery?
Not my jam, but Bread on Oak has great breads and some interesting vegetarian/vegan options
  • Best Cajun Cuisine?
Yeah, not going there with Andrus
  • Best Creole Cuisine??
The big names, probably, but that's also a broad category
  • Best Fried Chicken?
McHardy's (N Broad) is great, but honestly Lakeview Grocery is killing it lately (also, Popeye's)
  • Best Plate lunches?
go to Meat and Three on Oak, but it will probably be crowded.
  • Best Japanese Restaurant?
I already took out Sushi, above
  • Best Vietnamese?
My favorite pho restaurant is gone, but Mopho (City Park) for something different. Otherwise you're going to the Westbank (Tan Dinh or there's a Pho Tau Bay branch on Tulane)
  • Best boiled Crawfish?
Can't
  • Best Mediterranean?
There are some good places in Metairie, but the various locations of Byblos are good. Nothing in the city is really on my radar.
  • Best Muffalettas?
Cochon Butcher is probably the best. Napoleon House (warmed, how I like) and Central are not slouches
  • Best Sandwich shop?
There are many but Cido on S Carrollton (Italian) is a hidden gem
  • Best Pizza?
Prob Pizza Delicious (Marigny) but apparently St Peter (LGD) is winning awards
  • Best Italian Cuisine?
Depends what you like, but I would say Vincent's (St Charles, Metairie) or Irene's (FQ)
  • Best European otherwise?
Gianna, Crepe Nanou

I guess I should have typed "Favorites" instead of "Best". :)

? Cannot find. - Andrus

Sorry, my bad....

Note: technically Lakeview, no matter what their website says.

Best Plate lunches?

? No info found - Andrus

Hot Stuff

And, yeah, CIbo is right. And Scott, the owner of Katie's (midcity) and Francesca's (Harrison, Lakeview) told me about it, and both of his restaurants are traditional NOLA stuff and both well worth it.

I don't want to go there with a man from Carencro either, but I think the best Cajun food I have had in New Orleans is at Toups' Meatery. It is really good and I think probably authentic Cajun food since the owner/chef is from Rayne. (But, I know you knew that and that Isaac Toups is a really good guy.)

Fully endorse Toup's. Upscale cajun for sure, but well worth it, and, yeah, Isaac is great. Excellent note.
There! Was that so hard? :hihi:

I'll try it! Toups is a good Cajun name, so I'm optimistic. ;)

Also, I lived in Rayne for several years and was raised about 7 miles ESE of Rayne in a community called Judice. Good cooking, in what is a very Cajun area.

This would be a great sticky thread that can be updated as needed.

Here's one "taste test" I did that's not specifically on your list:

Best Pralines - Aunt Sally's

Good suggestion. I'll likely sticky it when it sinks too low. :)

I haven't been to Toup's for a while but I'm glad to see it's still up and running. They had me at "Meatery" and didn't disappoint.

Restaurant threads pop up from time to time and then they get buried. It'd be good to have a "one stop shop" that isn't gonna sink. Same when it's King cake season.

Mr. John's (steak) and Vincent's (Italian) are my two favorites for those categories. Next level food.

One category I would like to add (especially in today's tough climate) is "Best Value". While not in the city, Gendusa's in Kenner (Rivertown) is one of my "go to" restaurants. It's an Italian style place. Fantastic food, large portions, at a reasonable price. On weekends they have a "redfish" special that is money. Only the most hongry customers can leave without a "doggy bag". Drink specials are good, too. On Friday, you can get legit Ole Fashioneds for $5.

I’m in Mid-City so my suggestions will show favor to my area.
Parkway(poboys)
Toups(meat and chef’s personality)
Rosedale(I love spicer)
Mo-pho(viet)
Katie’s/mandinas/liuzzas(both Bienville and by the track) for New Orleans neighborhood fare.
Lunch specials at fiorellas(gentilly)
Brightsens in the riverbed is great
I like Mid-City pizza (reopened on banks)
Cafe Navarre does a solid breakfast

I’ll second gw fins. Maybe my favorite restraunt in the city.

Breads on Oak - having a child with Dairy allergy- this place is our go to- be advised its ALL VEGAN. ( they recently added Impossible burger to menu- but thats as close as you will get to anything "meat" )

And their pastries are really really good. And i can vouch for the bread- multi grain ( whole or half loaves ) and baguettes

I just thought of Mona's Cafe for Mediterranean -

Mona's Cafe

Mona's is... fine (their hummus is really good). I think there are better places in Metairie.

That said, their staff is lovely and the little attached Mediterranean grocery is awesome.

Lil Dizzy's in Treme is good for some of everything...

Soul food
Fried chicken
Po-boys

Does location matter? What on the menu do you like best there?

I've only been to the Metairie location, but I can tell you I have not been disappointed by anything I've ordered. I've had several of the Bahn Mi sandwiches (including the Tofu one because of my wife) and all have been outstanding. The Rockefeller Fries are 🔥🔥🔥. Almost always get the Crab Rangoon in addition to whatever else we order.

Nudo, (near Vets) is also ridiculously good for this type of fare. The rice plates, the Pho, the steamed bun sandwiches are all fantastic.

Best new place I've been to is Pigeon and Whale, creative menu and libations. Best thing I've had there is the Eggplant Donuts - thick cut eggplant with a hole in the middle, breaded and deep fried with Baba Ganoush in the center, topped with crispy thin flash fried strips of the eggplant skin and two types of sauces drizzled around the plate - phenomenal. The second best was the Cup O Joe dessert (tiramisu) with an espressotini. Their version of an Old Fashioned was great as well. Singling those items out should not distract you from the pan seared scallops over cous-cous and the pan seared halibut in a Thai style coconut sauce with bok choy.
