Better Toto Song: Africa or Rosanna? (1 Viewer)

BTW, if anyone hasn’t yet discovered ‘Professor of Rock’- it’s the best YouTube channel right now.. No qualifiers, simply the best channel.

He recently did a great breakdown of Rosanna (which prompted me to start this thread), and which includes a great interview with Lukather and Paich.. Those dudes are hilarious, just regular guys who happen to be incredibly talented musicians.

But the Professor of Rock’s content is consistently great, and hits on all cylinders, no matter which song he’s dissecting.

I think Marty Graw was unaware that In Your Eyes and Rosanna were both written about Rosanna Arquette... To be fair, i was yesterday years old when i found out that In Your Eyes was written about her.

But i dont get the relation between In Your Eyes and Africa(?)
Fine
Betcha can’t crack the code of “Bette Davis Eyes”

well hit me with an adrenaline shot, I was unaware as well. Such an unlikely person to have two historic songs about her. I suppose next your going to tell me she was one of the two trailer park girls going round the outside too?

For the record, I am well aware of the "connection" (I don't believe that Gabriel has ever officially confirmed this, though).
This live version of "In Your Eyes" is just awesome. Manu Katche kills it on drums. Choreography is a bit suspect, but it was the 90's.

(Sorry for hijacking the Toto thread).

So Gabriel doesn’t deny that the song is partially inspired by his relationship at the time with Rosanna Arquette - but he says the song is heavily inspired by African religion. There’s a supporting vocal in the song’s coda by Youssou N’Dour, singing in his native Senegalese language.

Why is that unlikely? She was a babe in the early 80s. I suspect her lovin’ was high quality if you get my drift - plus a little crazy, which can be a highly inspirational mix for song writers.

"Are you being sarcastic?"

My favorite brand of toilet is Toto because it reminds me of Toto songs when I go to the bathroom.

reminds me of a friend that taught his kid to sing Taking Care of Business when he would go. When he went to Kindergarten the class had a bathroom and the teacher called him to tell him that the whole class got a kick out of hearing him in there singing.

that would just be the worst luck. You’re r a great song writer, you meet a very special girl and your like "I'm going to write her first song, it will be cherry" only to find out she had already been there with Toto 4 years prior.
