Better Toto Song: Africa or Rosanna? (3 Viewers)

I wonder if one’s perception of In Your Eyes would vary based on whether or not they saw ‘Say Anything...‘ in the year it was released, or shortly thereafter.. Did you? I did, and of course the song conjures up memories of that movie, but i think it also stands up well on its own.. However, it’s impossible to say if I’d feel the same way had i never seen that movie, or if i had watched it years later, as an adult.
I did, but I was 15 and it wasn't Beverly Hills Cop. Didn't help that I was burned out on Gabriel from Sledgehammers endless rotation.

I will say that Sledgehammer is one of the worst songs ever recorded, from an otherwise good artist... never could understand how it became such a big hit.

I mean it's no "Solsbury Hill", but it certainly isn't as bad as "We Built This City" for being one of the worst songs ever. It became a hit because of MTV and the innovative video, but the song itself isn't terrible. I mean the lyrics and lead vocals aren't groundbreaking, but the layers of sound and mix of beats was pretty inventive.

The sexual innuendos most likely. However, if you listen closely, the bass line is pretty funky. Oddly enough I had my songs on "shuffle" the other night and it came on. Had totally glossed over that previously.

But I agree. "So" was/is one of my least favorite records by PG.

Solsbury Hill is one of my favorite Genesis songs... (i know)

I think my main problem with the song and video for Sledgehammer is just the incessant overplaying of both of them for those few months in the mid 80s.. if it hadn’t been so omnipresent , then I might not be so offended by it... Incidentally, i have a good friend who is a Genesis junkie, has seen them live like over 100 times (or at least different iterations of them, individual members, etc).. has a shrine to them in his home, runs a podcast, etc.. i dont really have a point, just wanted to mention that, since it’s sort of an unusual choice of a band to worship IMO.

Sledgehammer is still the video that had the most plays on MTV, so I get it. Plus it knocked Genesis out of the top spot at the time.

I realize the irony here, but please stop replying to this thread. I need it to drop off of Page 1. Every time I see it, I get a rendition of both Africa and Rosanna stuck in my head which goes on and on, but eventually goes away. Until I see this thread again.

To simplificate things...

Africa is the better "sing along" song
Rosanna is the better "air drumming" (or real drumming) song.

Just enjoy the music.

What?

MBS... your taste is rather...expansive
And your assessments are often ... generous
Negative critiques don’t seem to fit you very well

I had a roommate in law school that worshiped Genesis. Also some obscure band related to Genesis that I can't recall. But, I despise Genesis and think their only possible redeeming quality is Peter Gabriel, so it made for some tough moments when it came to picking music to play.

There’s something very enigmatic about Phil Collins
