Brandon Spikes now suspended the entire Vanderbilt game (1 Viewer)

I don't really care anymore. Meyer wasn't going to let him miss any time of any significance, so he'll never really be punished for the eye gouge, but his character has been raked over the coals so thats probably punishment enough.

If this is really Spikes' decision, its good to see that he has more sense than his Coach. Its a good move because he really shouldn't be needed for the game and since he's taking it upon himself to up his punishment he's got damage control for when character evaluation questions come up at the combine.

All a smokescreen. The media and the fans coming down hard on Meyer for his lack of an effective punishment brought this on. Spikes and Meyer are covering their rear ends. Meyer saw all the negative press and probably told Spikes to sit out the Vandy game (as they won't need him anyway), and if he agreed he would let him (Spikes) hold a conference and make it look like it was his idea so he could get some of the heat off of him.

I just hope Florida can still somehow pull out a victory without him.

I think Ryan Stamper (Spikes' backup at MLB) would start for 90% of the NCAA. Here they are both shown gouging Georgia's O Line.

Bingo.

So? The kid made a mistake. He apologized, and will miss a game due to public outcry. I think he has been punished enough.

This will all blow over, Gators will win, recruiting will not be hurt by this, Meyer doesn't care what media or fans think of him, ....

You consider trying to poke someone's eyes a mistake? I would call it a mistake if he didn't know what he was doing was wrong. A mistake would have been helmet to helmet contact while sacking a quarterback, not doing something like poking someone's eyes which has no bearing on making an aggressive move for the ball in football. He is apologizing because he got caught.
Say you're at work and decide to try to poke someone's eyes repeatedly ON PURPOSE. I really doubt all you have to do is say sorry and take a day off afterwords.

mistake [mi-steyk]-
1. an error in action, calculation, opinion, or judgment caused by poor reasoning, carelessness, insufficient knowledge, etc.

Did you make all the right choices in your early twenties?

Error-
1. a deviation from accuracy or correctness; a mistake, as in action or speech: His speech contained several factual errors.
2. belief in something untrue; the holding of mistaken opinions
You think he was of the opinion or belief that what he was doing was right at the time?
And now that there has been a public backlash that he realizes it is actually a bad thing to poke at eyes?
I'm not trying to be mean, just don't see this as a mistake. I'm not trying to get in a definition war. I just think saying he made a mistake is letting him off a little too light.

LeGarrett Blount punches a guy in the face (violent but unlikely to cause permanent damage) and is suspended for the entire season by his coach the very next morning. Brandon Spikes attempts to permanently blind another human being, and after multiple days of hem-hawing, is suspended for two quarters by his coach.

SEC! SEC! SEC!

I think a 22 year old made a mistake. A lack of judgement on his part. He was caught up in the intensity of the game, and let his emotions get the better of him. He seems to be handling it properly, and understands the perception now on him. He has traditionally not been a problem player, and this seems to be an isolated incident. I’m just not ready to crucify him over it.

I think something can be said for "during the flow of the game" and "after the game was over" as to the disparate punishment. Blount also has a history of actions contrary to the team, having been previously suspended twice by Oregon.

Right. Fair enough. Blount's thing was after the game, after the handshakes, etc... when you're supposed to go from warrior mode to sportsman mode or whatever. Regardless, one half of football for that is a joke.
