Brandon Staley and Christian Parker interviewed for Defensive Coordinator, Doug Nussmeier interviewed for OC; all on Feb 16 (12 Viewers)

Expect it. Every GM will make the saints pay a kings random for a trade up. And the Saints will expect it as well.

The only thing that would help, is if Garret Nussemier told every other team that if they draft him, he will refuse a second contract. This would force a team to consider if 5 years plus a franchise tag year or two is worth it.

If I had to guess, I would guess we will be picking somewhere between 17 and 22. I would expect to lose 2 or 3 first round picks as well as a couple of 2nd round picks and maybe even some 3rds.
If he is willing to tell every team that he won’t sign a second contract he might as well just refuse to sign his rookie deal and sit the year out. No reason to even play 5 years. If he did that he would be allowed to enter the supplemental draft the following year and be redrafted. If I’m remembering correctly Bo Jackson is the only player that has done this. Was drafted by Tampa in round 1 and sat out the year (played in the MLB) then Was drafted by the Raiders in the 7th round of the following year. (Supplemental). He had stated prior to the draft that he would sit out if Tampa drafted him. I believe a couple of other players over the years have made similar threats but can’t recall for sure.

How good is Nuss? I rarely watch college football and am in the small minority of people from Louisiana who wouldnt care if LSU fell off the face of the Earth. So I haven’t seen a single snap of him.

Nuss has every capability to become almost, or as good as Burrow. His father is now an OC of the NFL, so he has personal access to loads of NFL training going into his senior year at LSU. His primary issue is that he's always forcing things. He has to learn to take what the defense gives him, audible accordingly pre-snap with correct defensive reads and only making forcible throws at good times. There were a few things working against him this past year which was lack of WR talent for LSU (it was vastly overrated, Lacy was the best and he was looking to be 3rd round talent prior to legal issues). The play calling was also questionable at times, and downright bad other times.

But he has all the athletic ability, IQ and access to NFL caliber training that anyone would ever need to be a top 10 QB in the NFL. The biggest question is can he start making pre-snap defensive reads accurately and learning to not force the ball when the play doesn't work out. But his first year starting showed a lot of promise if he can grow on it.

Everyone will be watching to see what growth he makes this offseason and throughout the regular season.

As a non-LSU homer, I didn't think Nuss was all that good last season and would not want to see him in the Black and Gold (as a day 1 pick). But to be fair, I said the same about Burrow and Daniels in their first seasons at LSU. If Nuss has a similar breakout year next season, I would of course change my mind.

I wonder what the hold up is for the Defensive coaches announcements? the combine is soon
There also haven’t been any real offensive coach announcements, just media leaks. Perhaps the source of the leaks, likely agents, aren’t privy to what the Saints are doing on defense because they don’t represent who we’re talking to.

I wonder what's the hold up with deciding on the defensive coordinator job.
I’m becoming concerned about this. Combine starts next week IIRC. The defense is in worse shape than the offense.

Edit: yes, it could be a hang up with the agents and lack of sources for the media.

We have a first time head coach who's very offensive minded. It's quite possible and maybe even likely that fixing the defense isn't priority in year 1. Especially with how porous the offense was. When you throw in the idea that our defensive scheme is going from an odd man front 4-3 to an odd man front 3-4 cover 2 or cover 3, it even makes more sense spending a year assessing what talent we have while teaching the new scheme before committing lots of resources to fix it. It would be absolutely silly to spend a 1st round pick to upgrade our pass rush when we have Foskey, Payton, Granderson plus other talent (Ford, Ridgeway, Kpassagnon, Young) that may blossom on the new scheme.

For all those with Combine concerns, remember that the scouting staff already on this team have been working on evaluating the players who will be there for a year, two years or sometimes more. The Combine is not the beginning, or even the end, of that process.

A new coach or coaches can walk into that combine ready to look at the prospects on show, with a wealth of scouting information already under their arm.

Also remember, this is not an unusual occurrence. Plenty of teams have appointed their HC and staff after their previous teams' playoffs were over and they then proceeded to get it done at the Combine. This is the NFL and it's all part of how things work.

If, however, you remain unconvinced and want to be worried about it, that's your prerogative 🙂

I think both Nuss and Staley are represented by Trace Armstrong.

I'll add that some HCs stopped going to the Combine including McVay, LeFleur, and O'Connell.

Who is Parker represented by? Maybe Trace has looser lips than they do.

Don't know about Parker. I just know that Nick said that Staley and Nuss are represented by Trace Armstrong and he thinks the delay was about Armstrong getting as much money as possible for Nuss so he could get more for Staley.

I'd rather have the entire staff in place for the Combine, but I'm not sure it's a huge deal if they aren't. There is plenty of time to do scouting and facility visits before the draft and, as mentioned above, guys like McVay, LeFleur, and O'Connell have stopped even going to the Combine.

Underhill just made one of his videos talking about this very thing. He said the process has changed his way of thinking and that it is quite possible that it's not Staley but maybe Parker or another candidate... that they are doing a very thorough interview process. We just haven't been told about other candidates. He said that Christian Parker really impressed with his interview. Said the Nuss was already in the building and working for a couple of days before his hiring was finalized.

Yeah I think that's the case. Experience vs up coming coordinator. Hard to decide.
