Brandon Staley is Defensive Coordinator

He tends to run a base 3-4 but he does run a lot of 4-3 fronts. Sometimes those 4-3 fronts have 3 down linemen and one stand up edge rusher in what would normally be a DE position with his hand on the ground in a normal 4-3. He's certainly a multiple fronts guy that will use different things to attack different offenses.

For instance, Fangio, who is Staley's mentor, more or less ran a 5 man front against us when we played the Eagles this year to shut down our run game.

I think this could give new life to Mathieu. He's still very smart and should still be good at crashing down on the LoS to add a run stopper to the light box that Staley tends to use. But, we will need to add some good young Safeties soon.
I am not asking what kind of defense he is known to run, I am simply stating neither Staley nor Moore has spoken about scheme, just stating the facts not going against the wishes of SR.com to run a 3-4 because apparently it was invented in NO and we will be successful with it because of the Dome Patrol.

This is a solid list. Ignore the comments. I was super disappointed to read about Black's character concern. It's gotta be draft talk. The guy is well known (supposedly) in Iowa as a nice guy and a team leader. It's also a very polar opposite report to this article how great he stood out at the senior bowl: https://www.si.com/college/iowa/foo...ing-a-name-for-himself-at-reeses-senior-bowl-

Sometimes I'm really confused about these scouts. How the heck am I on this dang forum doing a better job then them prior to the senior bowl on who's who. I've gotta assume the reporter was just being dramatic when they said no one knew who Black was. Cause that can't be right. Anyone who has watched Iowa for just one single defensive series would've had Black and Higgins stand out to them. Or Dart for that matter not possibly being the best QB in this draft.

I first saw his name on this forum and then I looked him up, read up on him, etc. The "reporters" at the Senior Bowl probably were unaware of him b/c he doesn't stuff the stat sheet. His stats show up on others guys boxscores. That's the type of NT we need in the middle. His measurements are exactly what I'd want to see there. He's massive, long arms, huge hands, etc.

Did you watch his highlight video? It's pretty good. I saw most of that live on the TV.

If you want to watch growth in real time, watch the Iowa vs Ohio State game. In that game are some highlights and some lowlights. They played week 3 or 4 or something, early in the season. Then watch Iowa vs Missouri. They played last game of the season. You see quite a bit of growth occured between those two games, and both opponents are NFL caliber talent. It's almost as if he embraced his role to be a consumer of offensive lines and one play in particular comes to mind where he ditched his double team and moved one of the guys in front of MU's RB to block the hole.

Staley will need a generational talent to build around the defense.

His Los Angeles Chargers defense was rather unimpressive and borderline bad in clutch situation.

Very lukewarm. He had one legit amazing year and they was one Aaron Donald pressure away from blowing a Superbowl lead in the clutch.
More than willing to take my chances with him. He’s a very good defensive coach.

It has nothing to do with the Dome Patrol. It has everything to do with the fact that Fangio's scheme, whatever base is run in it, is the only scheme that is currently stopping the McVay/Shanahan system and is the only one really stopping the mobile QBs.

So, snarky remarks aside, I don't care if it's a base 3-4 or not. But, the fact is that Fangio, who taught Staley, and Staley tend to run odd fronts. He has occasionally used 4 or even 5 man fronts, but the base of the scheme is the 3-4 with a two high shell in the secondary.

There is simply no way that a DC is going to completely change the scheme that got him jobs as a DC and HC. He may not be able to implement the entire system right away and may play more even fronts than usual, but he is going to run his base scheme.

I like the hire but we're gonna need a true nose tackle to run that 3-4 defense.
Charger fans seem to think that we've made a huge mistake. Time will tell.

Which isn’t old either when you think about it. Hey we said we need to get younger! 😂 now we need to keep doing it team wise.

I was joking about the old man thing. But I can see how that might look different when you are 35 and not 53 like me. 😀

But, I do really like the youth movement on the staff. New fresh ideas.

What current players fit Staley’s defensive philosophy and which do not?

Staley likes him some elite LBers. Anyone know his prototype LB?
