If there’s any position on the roster that the New Orleans Saints feel most likely to fill with their first round pick, it’s offensive tackle.
It would be hard to imagine the Saints going into the season trusting Trevor Penning to be the answer at left tackle — not to say that they’ve given up on him, but the early returns have been extremely frustrating for the 2022 first-rounder. When Penning has not been battling injury, he has been ineffective, leading to him being benched last year. The Saints hope a full offseason helps him maximize his prodigious talent, but they cannot count that as a certainty.
On the other side, there is legitimate concern that stalwart right tackle Ryan Ramczyk may not be able to play in 2024 because of a chronic knee injury that has bothered him for years and forced him to miss the last four games of last season.
Simply put, there are wants and there are needs, and offensive tackle classifies as the most glaring need for this team. The good news is they should have plenty of options when their turn comes around at No. 14 — and the class is so deep, they could even find a quality starter with their second-round choice. ...
