Build the Saints' 3-4 Defense (33 Viewers)

So let's say Moore is the new head coach and has a say so in the new defensive coordinator and wants to run the 3-4 like the Eagles. Let's look about how we would need to construct it. First off, the Eagles do not run a typical 3-4 2 gap system, they basically run a 3-4 under 1 gap. For this you don't absolutely need a gigantic NT, but you still want a stout one to run the 1tech. The eagles run it was Carter as their 3 tech, Bresee would play here and a hybrid linebacker/edge in nolan smith as their strong outside linebacker at the 7 tech lined up outside the tight end. The only person I could see here is Foskey, who I don't have much faith in as a pass rusher let alone occasionally dropping into coverage. A lot of 3-4 will play cover 1 man rushing all front 5 or usually some zone blitzes so the OLB's arent manned up and just playing underneath. And usually have their best edge rusher at weak outside linebacker playing the 6 tech, granderson would be fine here. Our lineup would look like this. And before anyone says we run the majority of our snaps out of the nickel, about 66% I know, but that still leaves a lot of downs in the base formation.

SOLB - Foskey (Would much rather someone Like Pearce from Tennessee here)
SILB - Davis
WILB - Werner
WOLB - Granderson
5 tech - Tanoh, Cam, and Bresee could all play here, only way I put Bresee here though is if we draft a permier 3 tech like Graham.
3 tech - Bresee
1 tech - Saunders, Shepherd (This could also use an upgrade, (Walter Nolan, Kenneth Grant, Tyliek Williams, Deone Walker would all be great fits)
Bring Case Young back and pit him at SOLB, he would be a beast there

I love this idea, but Pearce would require a 1st rd pick and you would have to draft a player to replace Werner(trash). Granderson would excel in this defense, Breese at 5tech, Saunders/Shepard are to small for 1tech.

Walker would be fine ( 1st 3rd round pick) or FA pick up. Foskey would either excel in training camp of get cut. You could also bring Cam back 1 more year to play 5tech.

Lastly I would draft Mike Green to play OLB, that guy is just a playmaker and he can get to the QB. He reminds me of Zach Baun coming out of college, not the biggest guy but always around the ball making plays.

There's nothing good about base 3-4 defenses anymore then base 4-3 defenses. Both get schooled more consistently then defenses built to disguise blitz's and coverages.

Niners, Ravens, Rams, Chiefs... the one thing they have in common is constant disguises in their blitz's and coverages. Disguises are a bit easier to do in a 3-4 if you have the right personal. But on the flip side of that, 4-3 disguises tend to have a better performing front line.

So i'd like the focus to be shifted more towards disguising the defense well.

Agreed, the upgrade would have to go to 1tech and SOLB.

Cam would be my Sam over the TE he still manhandled those guys in run or pass game
In the end, I think we essentially end up in an even front if we line up that way. Not that I’m opposed to it. I don’t want to slide Cam inside, especially not at his current pay rate.

Vangio is a old school DC, I'm not sure many younger DCs still run it. We've been dedicated ingredients personal to a 4-3 since Haz i think. I'm open to but I don't know if you switch in one season personal wise.

I agree even at his age I don’t want Cam 2 gapping. A wrinkle of the 3-4 under is that yes it’s a 1 gap scheme but at least 1 player has to 2 gap.

Generally that’s the 5 tech.

In some of those schemes the Sam is actually the primary rusher. The Will LB is a rusher/ dropper and then the Mike and Mo are the two ILBs

FWIW Roman Harper said it in 2016 that Allen’s defense is more 3-4 than 4-3 and to a degree you saw a lot of standup rushers the last two years so we arent diverging much

3-4 always reminds me of the heady days of the Dome Patrol...I'll take a punt on that
That's why people on here are always hoping for its return, like its a return to glory or something.

I just want a defense with playmakers on it, who cares what the scheme is, lets get some talent on defense and not just guys who play the position to field a defense.
