Build the Saints' 3-4 Defense (28 Viewers)

I agree even at his age I don’t want Cam 2 gapping. A wrinkle of the 3-4 under is that yes it’s a 1 gap scheme but at least 1 player has to 2 gap.

Generally that’s the 5 tech.

In some of those schemes the Sam is actually the primary rusher. The Will LB is a rusher/ dropper and then the Mike and Mo are the two ILBs

FWIW Roman Harper said it in 2016 that Allen’s defense is more 3-4 than 4-3 and to a degree you saw a lot of standup rushers the last two years so we arent diverging much
I feel like you need three guys lined up from 4-tech in to be a base odd front, regardless of who puts a hand in the dirt. It’s not easy to impact the B gap from the 5-tech spot, which creates the B-gap bubble common to even fronts.

With Tanoh at 5tech? Or Bresee at 5-tech and draft a 3tech?
A reminder that Tanoh is a free agent just coming off a pretty serious injury. He played in a couple of games at the end of the year, but who knows how much he has left.

Oh ok thank you, thought we had him 1 more year.

But a 1 tech in a 4-3 is more likely to play wider. So the 3-4 nose needs to be better built to do it every down.
I mean to an extent I guess but in a 3-4 under you have a 5 tech, 3, 1, and another 5/6, just like in a 4-3

I catch your drift though, but the differences are minimal, plus if there's 1 player I want getting double teamed, it is my NT to allow my playmaker pass rushers to get 1 on 1.

If we bring in Staley as DC we're almost surely installing a hybrid 3-4. We'll have to fix our run D/NT situation immediately as that was arguably the worst performing part of our defense or even team as a whole last year.

Grant would be rich at 9 and it's a pretty deep draft at NT, I think we prioritize an offensive weapon or Edge guy at 9 but if we do Graham (via trade up) or Grant are the guys to do it.

Imagine a draft with Tmac or Warren at 9, Tyliek Williams or Deon Walker for NT and then Bradyn Swinson or Kennard in the 3rd for SOLB/edge
I want absolutely nothing to do with Deone Walker.

100% guaranteed bust or below average player.

For reference, here is how the Eagles interior defenders lined up with a hand in the dirt throughout the regular season:

And here are the edge defenders:

The Eagles rarely had a player lined up as a 5-tech, and Jalen Carter had the most snaps from that alignment (23). By comparison, they lined players up as a 4- or 4i nearly seven times as often.
