Call of Duty:Modern Warfare 2

Maybe if our FPS games were a little more even handed and fair, more people would have positive experiences, and tragedies like Columbine wouldn't happen.

Mongoose, stop perpertrating the decline of society.

So, I ask you, do we do this hobby to have fun, or do we do this hobby to prove who is the best at quickly moving and touching things with our fingers? Personally, I do it for fun, and while I'll admit that it's not always fun when a game is too unbalanced, sometimes it's not fun when a game is too balanced.

great point widget....

while i get satisfaction from pawning faces in warhawk(not you Asa), but the whole point is to have fun

i find the multiplayer in CODMW to be a lot of fun....and even though i rarely finish near the top, i still enjoy it

Well, I suspect your point deals with some societal issues that Little League Soccer brought into vogue with everyone getting trophies, and I agree with your sentiment to some extent, but we are not talking about a child development tool here. It's a game and even if it's not perfectly equal and even if they give some help to lesser players and the best don't always win, it really comes down to is it fun or not? Halo can be fun, I've honestly had more fun playing KZ 2, but I get some enjoyment from Halo multiplayer. And, it has nothing to do with whether the better players always win. I'm pretty mediocre and usually finish in the middle of the pack, if not worse but that does not change my enjoyment level. On the other hand, Warhawk, which is also by your criteria what we should strive for, I don't find fun because the experience/skilled/better players have so much advantage that all you really end up doing is ground pounding and getting killed by Warhawks from above. Hence, not fun.

So, I ask you, do we do this hobby to have fun, or do we do this hobby to prove who is the best at quickly moving and touching things with our fingers? Anyway, I just though it was funny that you called a PS 3 exclusive a great game. I know that had to hurt given the rootkits and all.

This is the issue: why do we enjoy the games that we enjoy?

I submit that competitiveness has traditionally been an aspect. Pulling back and taking a panoramic view, I'm not sure I want to live in a place where people have fun by just participating. I'm sure you and I could sprawl this discussion into something that wouldn't be interesting to most, but my thoughts are obviously rooted in my feelings regarding Objectivism and man's nature.

But to scale it down to VG board relevance, it ain't just me who is worried about this game. Other forums are filled with COD veterans who are worried about these new additions. Even the perks have perks -- there is something called "pro perks" that make the perks even that much perkier. It's getting ridiculous, and players are worried that MW2 will be a noobfest. I find that ironic, because I've always considered COD multiplayer to be a noobfest.

nobody is asking you to choose between being competitive and just having fun

but dude, playing different games is ok....halo isn't the only thing out there

and i think that widge's point was that having fun is(or should be) the main goal of gaming, anything else is secondary

i play at least 4 different multiplayer games regularly...just depends on how involved i feel like being in a game

I'm sure that Ms. Rand would love to show her mad skillz at Halo 3 and that she would highly approve of the best winning and despise the idea of equaling things out. Then again, I'm not sure if she would have had a problem with gaining advantages from longer play. But, I'm not sure that video games are a good microcosm for the rest of society. Of course, she also probably wouldn't have had a problem with rootkits. It was practically the electronics version of Rearden Metal. So what if it gave Sony an unfair advantage.:hihi:

Anyway, like I said it's about fun and yes, it's not fun to play a game where you are forced into being equalized with worse players, and, yes, matchmaking, not perks for worse players is the answer, but that does not mean that an unequal game can't be fun.

So basically, all you have to do it get your best player to die 3 times on purpose, then he'll be super strong and become unstoppable for the rest of the game?

If this were the case this game would suck. He gets a temporary (1 life long) minor advantage. If you skew that with hyperbole it helps your argument but it doesn't make what you claimed true.

And Mongoose,

Don't buy the game.

You and the rest of us will be much, much happier that way.

It may seem simple and short as a solution but I swear it makes complete sense. Your advance propaganda campaign against anything other than a Bungie-created FPS can be put to rest. That alone will cut your posts down by 15% (estimate only-most of your posts are very helpful and insightful musings). It really is that simple, don't buy the game. Please don't buy it. Simplify your life. Do...not...buy...it.

Either way you look at it, it's unfair and unbalanced.

Obviously conflating these things is ridiculous, but we're having fun here, right? Let's face it, we're not splitting atoms. We're talking about video games.

That said, the type of games we play speak about the wider culture. Look at how different those kooky japanese games are with their pokemons and whatnot.

Anita, I agree that we play games for fun; what I'm trying to do is put a finer point on what we deem "fun." The interesting item on our plate is why do some people find it fun to run around being mediocre in a game that won't allow skill to stand out and why other people are completely turned off by this.

Is there a grand point to be made about our culture? I'm not sure. But I'm pretty sure that the soccer mentality, the give every kid a ribbon mentality, the let's not grade schoolwork mentality is manifest in COD's popularity.

Ultimately, what I'm trying to say is that I don't find such games fun. I don't mind logging on to goof around; I do that stuff all the time. But if it's mindless goofing, why keep score? Once you put a score up there, I'm going to try to win. And trying to win a game that is designed to not favor skill is exceedingly frustrating.

You throw darts, right? Do you try to win, even though you're there mostly for the drinking and socializing? Would you like it if some dudes randomly had perks that made their darts hit the bullseye? Could you have as much fun without keeping score as you do while keeping score?

WDQ, just so you know it's not just me and my Bungie man-love, here are some selected quotes from other forums:

Fail confirmed. So now instead of having to use overkill and do w/o stopping power, or use stopping power and only get a pistol.....you can have shotguns, machine guns, or rocket launchers automatically replace your pistol.

That's quite possibly the dumbest thing I've ever heard of.

Great news my ***. It was there to BALANCE the game. Now ANYONE can have stopping power, a 50cal, AND an mp5/shotgun/AT4/etc

Most of the news out of this is bad news, so far. I'm starting to get worried. It feels like IW just set out to get more bullet points and new sh*t on the back of the box instead of actually just trying to focus on improving the gameplay, whether or not it means a metric ton of new crap.

I can't believe they are adding so many stupid things to this game. Its like only things that foul mouth 14 year olds would want in the game lol.

Blood on the screen is mentally challenged.

The game is VERY slanted towards nooby players/those who runNgun and die a lot.

Get to use your killers kit, or get 20 seconds of double health when you respawn.
Getting really dumb

yep, seems like they are going overboard with this stuff. most of it will be so over used. and you guys thought juggy and marty were bad lol

Yea that's what I'm afraid of. Especially now with how they do secondary weapons. There is no point to using overkill so people will either have Jugg or Stopping power at all times.

That and dual SMGs pretty much negates any other weapon on CQB maps.

well, this is what made COD4 so popular I think, It was easy to pick up and it kind of catered to this style of play of getting easy kills and somewhat cheap features. So now they are going to kick it in to overdrive.

20 seconds of double health is not something to cry about when theres a perk that gives you double health called juggernaut the whole time its on.

True. But its a reward for DYING. Why should you be rewarded for sucking.

Well. Im officially worried. Perk, pro perks perk perks, death streaks, 4 deaths and you get better weapons, on and on and on...

***?!?!?!? It's like a guilty gear fighting game but a shooter. Some of this **** is waaay too much and is leaving me highly dissapointed.

This game is going to be chaos and nobody is going to last long with all the crap going on.

Lame.

Listen baby. All I am saying is...thats a lot of ****. Why do the perks need perks? Why do the perks perks need perks with perks? Why do kids getting their butts kicked get bonuses? Snipers will be respawning in position with their flares and it's all going to equal total chaos and no kill streaks. Oh and full weapon for secondary?

Hurry up November 10th! Get here!

By the way, it's a Tuesday for those wanting to know. So midnight releases will be at 12:01am between Monday and Tuesday.

Unless you have the time perk so you can get it at 11:51 but if you have the bling perk you can perk the time perk with the speed perk and get it at 11:49 but if you wait 1,000 minutes you can get the pro-time-perk and perk that with the pro-bling perk and perk them to get it in 1941.

we clear?

monogeese,

i do play darts and yes, i am competitive when i play....i don't want to lose ever

of course, it's generally no big deal unless we lose in the playoffs to a team who plays in Gold on Tuesdays but in Bronze on Thursdays.....those guys definitely had perks and attachments

in the gaming world, if i just want to have fun, i can play COD4...i know i will get pwned but i still enjoy it....if i am ready for some more strategery and competition, i can play warhawk or battlefield

there is room for both on my gaming plate

Getting pwned is fun to you?

Because getting pwned usually cancels out any fun to be had. At least for me.

I mean, you played with me. I'm constantly calling shenanigans on the other team and quitting about 3 games later.
