Analysis Cap Implications of Keeping and Cutting Derek Carr (9 Viewers)

” Designating [Carr] as a post-June 1st cut nets $30 million in savings, with “only” $21.5 million in dead money, which is more manageable – then again, each team can only give that designation to two player per year and, like Carr, the Saints carrying the next highest cap charges (Cameron Jordan and Taysom Hill) would have to be designated post-June 1 cuts to generate meaningful savings in 2025.

The drawback to the early June 1st cut is that the team doesn’t get cap relief until June 1. The Early cut was added in the 2012 CBA as a favor to the NFLPA and is not intended to be of any benefit to the team but only the players. The players benefit is that it allows up to 64 players to hit free agent earlier when more money is available than there would be in June.

There is no draw back if the plan is pivot

The title is misleading. The article's sub-title says Saints "could release Derek Carr rather than trade him."

I wish they wouldn't say 2 different things like that. The main title is arguably clickbait.

And to make matters worse, they say a "prominent reporter" thinks they will release him. That "prominent reporter" is "Matt Okada is a researcher and fantasy analyst for NFL Network and NFL.com." Dude is a fantasy football analyst. He's not even reallly a reporter.

Truth is that they are speculating just like we are. Nobody outside of maybe Loomis and Moore know what is going to happen with Carr. And even they may not sure as it may depend on other deals with other players.
