Chiefs bested offers from Saints, Packers to sign WR Marquez Valdes-Scantling (1 Viewer)

Not overpaying versus not having the money to be competitive in free agency…tomato tomato

They have $22 million in cap space. They could have matched or beaten the offer if they wanted to. It's more like tomato/sour grapes.

And paying $10 million per year AAV for 3 years for that player would have been crazy.

I think that MVS is overrated. But that $22.6 isn’t our 2022 money. That’s borrow money from 2023. So you can use every bit of it on players, but you are doing so at the expense of our 2023 budget. I’m sure our budget constraints are playing a role on missing out on FAs. Armstead for example…that is someone you’d like to keep at that price, but apparently he was over budget.

How is it not "our money"? The NFL salary cap doesn't work like the private loan market. There are always more years you can kick the can down the road and the salary cap always goes up barring another COVID situation. In fact, it's due for a big bump after this year with the new TV contract.

Lets get jameis some big bodies. I think thats his style

Winston needs people with deep speed that can run deep routes. His best skill is the deep ball off of play action. Right now all we really have as far as a deep threat is Harty who is fast as hell, but he's also 5'6" and 170 lbs. That's a tough target to hit and at 170 lbs. he's prone to getting hurt.

Will Fuller is the only decent WR on the market left. They need to trade for a WR at this point (B. Cooks/D. Parker)

You can take two clear conclusions this off-season.

- The wide receiver free agent market is getting ridiculously expensive. Players are getting way more than that is worth.
- This is great class of rookie receivers, both in talent and numbers.

Teams are learning this and will be preparing to act accordingly.

Teams that don't seem to have a need at the position will be taking rookie receivers, hoping to find great talent at cheaper contracts.

After the draft, many veterans that will be looking for an expensive contract on 2023 will be either released or traded.

I will take a good look at teams that have an expensive #1 receiver and a second receiver that may be looking to earn over 15-20 million a year on a second contract. Some teams won't be able or willing to afford it.

The Tyreek Hill case is the extreme. A talent that is traded because his contract is too expensive to afford. The chiefs decided to move him before losing him for only a compensatory 3rd round pick.

My point is, the saints have to be patient and not over pay right now. Wait for the draft, grab a receiver or two, and/or look for a trade or to sign a released player after the draft.

These are all valid points. However, we know the team never goes into a draft with a clear hole that forces them to draft out of need, and at this point the only guy they look like they will sign is TQS. Given the mash unit at WR last year, I don't know how anyone can be satisfied with that.

If the difference between the Saints getting a comp pick for Marcus Williams, and signing MVS at that price (and eliminating the Marcus Williams comp pick), I’m okay with passing on MVS.

I thought negating a comp pick had to come from signing someone at the same position at a comparable dollar amount, as in another safety. So Maye may.

We may be better off trading a low round pick for a veteran WR to avoid losing the comp pick for TA.

I’m getting to the point where I just want them to sign SOMEBODY! They could sign 70 y/o Steve Largent and I’d at least be intrigued. “Let’s see what he has left in the tank”.
I know right...running it back with what was pretty much the worst WR group in the NFL or SEC is somewhat concerning.

Good no signing for the price. I don’t think he is a 10M/yr WR when I look at what others are signing for. I really want us to bring in Fuller for the right price. If we go into the the season with 15M free cap space (22M - rookies), then I’d love to see us push forward some void year $.
