Coach Pete Update: Not Good on Davenport. Some on Hill and Bridgewater, Some Saints Good News also (3 Viewers)

Sophomore slump hit Lattimore like a freight train. Lets not rag on Davenport for making the same mistakes as others have. Just hope he can overcome it and catch up.

Of course, you can rag on him. He's a professional. He's an adult. Coming in 15 lbs overweight should be embarrassing to him. Very unprofessional behavior. He let his employer down and he let his teammates down.

Agree 100%. Coach Pete shared some info about Davenport which I found very interesting. This is from his coaches. Davenport is:

1) Extremely intelligent with very high football IQ
2) A dedicated student of the game who studies film and playbook extensively
3) Explosive violence on the field
4) And yet he is very shy. Because of his shyness, he didn't participate or stay in contact with many other Saints players and coaches during the offseason. This is a major reason he got so out of shape along with some immaturity of a 21 year old kid

There's something wrong with the phrase "21-year-old kid".

Let a million dollar drop in your bank account and complete freedom in NOLA while you're only 21- 22 year Olds and see how you react for a few weeks.

22 years old is hardly an adult..

Of course, he's an adult. You can vote. You can serve in the military. You can marry. You are out of school. You can own a gun. You are definitely an adult at 21. It is the law of the land that you are an adult at 21. I don't know where ridiculous notions come from that you're not an adult. It's that kind of low expectation that allows 21 year olds to act like they're not adults.

Davenport was under the supervision of the coaching staff for much of the offseason, wasn't he. You mean he put on 15 pounds between the end of offseason training in June and reporting to camp in late July?

I suspect that had Davenport added so much weight during that brief period, the coaching staff would have so irate that those in the media would have been talking about early and often.

I was not in favor of the trade when it was made and still have serious doubts about whether it should have been made. But with all respect to Swimmer and Coach Pete, I would like to get some confirmation of this from someone else because I think Deuce and Strief at some point would have commented on this.

RJ - let me clarify a bit. These conversations with Coach Pete are seldom sitting down taking notes. I'm grabbing as much of his attention in small bits as I can while he is working out others at the same time.

Coach Pete 1st mentioned that because of his shyness and not having a dedicated coach watching him all offseason, he came him to camp very out of shape. I then mentioned that there were reports on SR that Davenport had bulked up 15 pounds of muscle during the offseason. Pete said that would be fat around his gut and not muscle.

Pete harped on how out of shape he was when he reported for camp

Sorry for the confusion

Can we please keep in mind that this is all speculation, nothing confirmed by any credible sources? I don’t think Davenport is tweeting a retirement announcement any time soon—

Man, Davenport has to lay off of the McDonalds you’re a professional athlete. I know it’s extremely hard but he’s has to watch what he put into his body and as you can see his performance took a hit because of it.
He lives in New Orleans, its more likely the culprit was Jambalaya, Etoufee, Fried Catfish, PoBoys, Gumbo, and boiled Crayfish than it was McDs.

Not buying the Davenport weight gain rumor. Even if he did add 15 lbs "around his gut", it would most likely be water weight that he would have shed the first week of camp in that Louisiana heat.

So if someone wants to fish for a reason he didn't obliterate pre season football, this ain't it.

Whether it was 15 pounds around his gut or 10 pounds of overall water weight, showing up to camp pretty badly out of shape could well have a very negative impact on the play in the beginning of the season like Lattimore last year.

I don't think 15 lbs extra are that big of a deal when you are listed as being 6'6", 265 lbs, and an elite athlete. 4 weeks later, he's probably back to 265 lbs.
