Since there seems to be a lot of ya'll who vacation and visit Destin, I have cut and pasted an email I got today from Legendary, Inc. It is a develop firm constructing a condominium and retail complex right when you cross the Destin Pass bridge coming from Okaloosa Island. If you've been in the past year or two, you've probably seen the construction. I will be closing on a fractional unit (kinda like a timeshare but different) within the next 2 weeks on the 9th floor. I will rent to SR members at a 20% discount to rack rates. My available weeks are: 9/7/7-9/14/7, 11/2/7-11/9/7, 3/21/8-3/28/7, 5/30/8-6/13/8, 9/12/8-9/19/8. PM me if interested.

A New Orleans Icon Finds Recipe for Success in Destin
Legendary Proudly Welcomes Commander's Palace to
HarborWalk Village in Destin, Florida
It’s an historic icon, cherished landmark and the very heart and soul of New Orleans. It’s the Crescent City’s prized possession – Commander’s Palace. Since 1880, the famous restaurant, located in the heart of the Garden District, has successfully reflected the best of the city with both Creole and American heritages, as well as some of its own culinary creationss. Today, it is with great excitement that Destin developer, Legendary, Inc., announces that this priceless dining experience will soon be part of the Destin Harbor and HarborWalk Village.
Commander’s Palace, like HarborWalk Village, shares a similar visionary design of the highest standards, high-end accommodations, and fantastic experiences to remember. The atmosphere and tradition of the restaurant, carried on today by Ti Martin and Lally Brennan – two members of the well-known New Orleans Brennan family – is like that of a party with old friends that you never want to leave.

On the decision to expand to Destin and HarborWalk Village, Ti noted, “What attracted us to HarborWalk Village was the vision Peter and his team had of a world-class resort in Destin - something that had never been done before. And as part of that vision, they included a gorgeous Gulf Coast setting and top-notch facility for a restaurant. Lally and I are excited that Commander’s is that restaurant and that we are part of the HarborWalk Village experience.”

Currently with only its home location of New Orleans, Commander’s Palace and the Brennan family has been highly selective of its restaurant locations. Ti revealed this selective nature when she said, “Lally and I have traveled all over the world looking for a beach that’s better than Destin – and we failed. Destin has been our playground for as long as I can remember. It’s the place where my family has gone to have fun and now, with the new location at HarborWalk Village, we’ll mix a little work in with the fun.”

The Legendary team members working with Ti and Lally to ultimately garner one of just three Commander’s locations were Rik Bos, Vice President, Legendary Realty, Inc., and Bryan Deane, Vice President Commercial Properties for Legendary Realty, Inc. Along with its grand legacy, Commander’s appealed to this team through two traits the Legendary company takes pride in as well – Southern Hospitality and extraordinary service.

Rik Bos shared his excitement with the latest addition to HarborWalk Village, explaining how Commander’s represents tremendous progress in the crowning, justified focus of the Destin Harbor as the gateway location to the Emerald Coast. Commenting on what Commander’s Palace will mean for Destin and HarborWalk Village, he further noted, “This legendary establishment will bring people from far and wide to dine in a location that will now truly speak for itself.”

Adding to Rik Bos’ accolades of the Big Easy icon, Bryan Deane, a native of New Orleans, knows far too well the magic that a place like Commander’s will bring to the Harbor. “Growing up in New Orleans, I dined at Commander’s regularly. Nothing compares to this grand experience – something I know Destin vacationers and locals will embrace and enjoy for its fine foods, impeccable service and good times.”

So what is it that makes this place so legendary? The answer is found in the splendid food and wine one expects from a world-class dining experience - one with the unique spirit, culinary integrity and “joie de vivre” that have made Commander's Palace a legend over the decades. It’s this one of a kind experience that has earned the restaurant countless notes of praise and awards, including: Outstanding Restaurant Award and Outstanding Service Award by the James Beard Foundation, the Fine Dining Award by Distinguished Restaurants of North America, Reader's Choice Awards and #1 City Restaurant by Southern Living Magazine. And let’s not forget the fact that two of America's biggest celebrity chefs, Paul Prudhomme and Emeril Lagasse, began their storied careers in the Commander’s Palace kitchen.

"While Commander’s Palace is 127 years old we feel like all our best culinary experiences are ahead of us,” noted Ti. “Commander's has a healthy reverence for past culinary traditions but it is our day to day passion to be on the leading edge of Creole cooking's continuous evolution."

According to Legendary’s timeline, Commander’s Palace, which will encompass over 8,000 square feet at HarborWalk Village, is set to open in summer of 2008.

Legendary plans to announce a full list of additional retailers by winter 2007.

is it the one immediately to the right? Where the Jet ski rentals are?

Saw it in June, looked about 90% then. Nice. We go every year for my industry convention ( Hilton Sandestin ). Are they going to mfg some sort of beach area?

The Pat O's will be on the west side of the building allowing a fantastic view of the Pass while enjoying your purple people eater.

A private boat will take guests/owners from the property to either Noreiga Point or to the beach on the other side of the Pass.

Commander's=chain, highly, highly, doubtful

I just dont see it working. Sure, Destin has its share of wealthy visitors, but most of those, including the residents are seasonal.

Unless Commanders is going to a casual dress code, I dont see it working.

actually they prolly will...we ate at a place called Seagars and I forgot my jacket and was surprised to find out that it was not required ( after a phone call said it was ).
On the flip side, I know of 7 industry conventions that are held in June and July in Sandestin and can only imagine most of those folks dining one evening at commanders. And they do bring suits for just that reason.

A new CP will never compare to the original for me. But living here I certainly can admit that I am excited about the Brennan's opening up shop on the Harbor.

I am not sure if any other posters have eaten at Commander's since it re-opened since post-K. I ate there Mardi Gras weekend for brunch and my mom's 82 birthday. We had a party of 15. They had a beautiful boquet of flowers for her. Service was impeccable. The bloody mary's and screwdrivers were continually topped off without charge. The dress code was not coat and tie required but more of "dress casual" not casual dress. No jeans, pullovers, sandals. I was told the coat and tie code is gone. The sheepshead was excellently prepared as was most everybody's meal. The banana's foster was great and the jazz trio band very enjoyable.

Yeah, I went back post-Katrina and it is now dress casual as far as I was told. They say no jeans, but actually there were a few people in jeans when I went. I believe locals can get away with them, though I don't see why you would want to and look like an idiot.

Actually I was there on Father's Day, which also happened to by my dad's birthday. And it was ALSO MY birthday the day before. So it was a big deal for us.....two birthdays and a father's day. The food was excellent, but the service was awful. Our meal took three hours. Our desserts, which were pre-arranged by my mother, were all wrong. And they forgot the vodka in our bloody mary's. They serve their bloody mary's with the mix first, then come back and add the vodka apparently. But they forgot. So after 10 minutes and after telling two waiters that my drink needed alcohol, I had to get up and find someone who would complete my hangover mix. Way overrated IMO.

The jazz combo was nice, though.

:jauhnny:

I live here year-round, and nowadays (as opposed to the 80's and early 90's) there is very little difference in the traffic and number of people in the restaurants, grocery stores, shopping centers, etc. throughout the year. Used to be that you'd get the annual influx of snowbirds from November through February, and the spring breakers in March, but other than that, it was pretty deserted from Labor Day until Memorial Day. That is definitely no longer the case.

so destin is following the cards played to the tax payers of santa rosa/escambia county in pb and navarre?

god as my witness..i will one day end up on the sria board.and i will fight tooth and nail to reverse so much

things WILL revert back to "retro" down the road
