Cornerback offseason summary (1 Viewer)

To many on this forum believe everything they hear; You'll need to get the facts about a player before passing judgement.

I would have to agree with your assesment. It seems to me though, as much as we try, we will not wind up with any bonafide starter at CB throug free agency. The names that will not be franchised or break the bank (Samuels) all have their issues. Florence played bad this year, and Cromartie replaced him. Due to injury, he is playing now int the playoffs. The problem with a lot of these second tier guys is they play okay in their defense. In our defense, they will probably be horrible. Realistically, no corner worth his salt is going to be available in free agency, unless we want to spend 80 million or make a trade for mr. selfish and immature Hall, which I am in favor of. I would rather take a chance on someone like Hall than any other name available, draft included. Sure, he hates being on a loser team and can have a bad attitude, but that didn't deter New England from picking up Randy Moss-- and look how that worked out. The fact is we desperately need a corneback, and we have for the past 10 years or so. Trading for Hall is well worth the risk, even if he has a bad attitude, becuase at least he can PLAY.

:worthy: :worthy: :worthy: i like the way u think!

I should also make this point concerning Hall. We started 0-4 and there was no finger pointing becuase the guys we have have such high character. I am all for players with high character, and the turn around we made to get back to 4-4. My point is that sometimes you have to go against your politics to succeed. Ideally, we would have a team with high character and TALENT on BOTH sides of the ball. The way free agency is set up, and considering the position of CB, you are better of drafting one and going through the 2-3 years of a learning curve. But we need 2 bonafide corners yesterday, and with a Deangelo Hall, we don't start 0-4. With 2 solid corners, we go from overacheivers to year in year out contenders and can shift our focus to getting an athletic LB corp and upgrading at DT and S. I know we want high character guys, but get Hall for our sake and grab a high character CB in the draft to learn and take over when it is time to move on from Hall.

couldnt agree with you more:plus-un2: :plus-un2:

He hasn't been a probowl caliber CB since his rookie year. I suggest you watch a few Falcons games over the past 2 years and then say you still want him.

over our guys? i think he would be a tremendous upgrade. also look at the falcons teams over the past 2 years....not very good looking. hall wants to win, i agree that hes a little immature but u gotta understand hes in his early 20's. but theres no denying his talent.

If Assante will come here and he is as good as people are saying he is with the Patriots then we should spend the money to bring him in. That is what we saved the money for in the first place. You pay the bucks for Samuel, you then pay for another cheaper corner, you then pay for a real deal safety to take over for ( all I see is the back of your jersey 29), and then you draft the best linebacker. When you pick the linebacker he has to start and make a big impact in his rookie year. They cannot mess this pick up. If they do and we pick a lb who does not get it as a rookie we will be in serious trouble again. Somebody is going to have to earn there money on talent evaluation this year or get fired.

assante is a good player but i dont think he'll be as good in our system. plus get ready to break the bank for him. as far as josh b goes remember this guy is only human. hes been changing roles and positions since he got here. its pretty easy to see why he hasnt progressed. give the kid some time and consistancy and im sure he'll be fine if not really good.

why dont we overhaul the defense-new scheme new coaches new players
just start from scratch, its been years since weve even had a mediocre defense, there is not a CB out there that can overcome the problems of this defense

the scheme is fine and a coaching change is the last thing we need. we need consistancy, we dont have to get a new car just fix whats broken!

Off season evaulaton

On the cb issue. Imo it is going to b slim picking at the cb position.I like Samuel but u will have to give clement type of money. Clements is not worth that type of money,Trufant will get tagged. That leaves florence and guys like gay, poteat, and etc. Now i know that the David experiment didn't work but hey he was 4th or 5th on our list when it came to db's. i say lets go get florence, we know he plays in a aggressive man scheme, we know he can play.If we can pull the trade to get Hall. Do it. I think u can get him fairly cheap considering he wants to get out of there. People say he is a cancer. Before this year what has he done to be a cancer. Yes, he blew up on the field a couple of times this year but hey, i look at it as a guy being a competitor and was frustated with losing. Gay is a nice player but he is a nickel back at best. GO GET VILMA, now i don't think u should give more then a second for him, that's if he pass a evaluation. We were looking at him the year we got Will Smith, we will just be getting him a few years later. If u can get a nice cb, and lb for the d. We can do everything else through the draft.

this would be a good offseason imo:plus-un2: :plus-un2: i hope we end up in this situation come draft day but the chances are not good.

I think the chances are very good for at least one of those scenarios!!!!!

Perfect senario is we sign Marcus Trufant, as IMHO he is the top CB on the market (even with Samuel). I also think he is the perfect fit for what we do in New Orleans.

Realistically we probably push hard for Drayton Florence. With Drew's friendship and the chance to come in and start from day one, we are an attractive option for him IMHO. I also wouldn't be surprised if they went after Jacques Reeves. Payton and Gibbs have knowledge of him, and he is a better fit for the man scheme we use. He also had a respectable year in Dallas filling in for Anthony Henry and Terrance Newman.

All and all I wouldn't be disapointed if we got Florence and Reeves. I think they are both suited for the man to man schemes New Orleans perfers to run. I also think that Reeves has the ability to push David for the starting spot and would create competition and therefor improve the defense. I think you have to expect McKenzie will be out until at least week 6, and you have to prepare in the offseason like you won't have him at all.

Also signing Florence will not cost as much as Samuel or Trufant, though I think people do under estimate how much he will get. He is 27, has 5 years in the NFL, starting most of those games, has averaged double digit pass deflections for the past 3 years and has decent interception numbers too. Remember Jason David got a 4 year deal worth 16 million. Rod Hood got a 5 year deal worth 15 million. Florence is probably going to get more than that. I would expect Florence to get a deal that averages 5-6 million.

Either way, I think both Reeves (who should get a deal averaging about 3 million a year) and Florence will be money well spent. Signing them may also open the doors to signing a big time linebacker like Briggs.

Hall isn't coming to New Orleans. Why would the Falcons trade him to us? Not happening.

Our only real options of improving our CB play -- the draft, and Adam Jones. Yep, I said it.

MM is twice the CB Hall is.

This is ridiculous anyway. Division rivals do not trade with other divisional rivals. I don't know why people are even bothering to bring Hall up.

Hall will never see the open market. He would be franchised in a nanosecond. DeAngelo Hall is one of the best CBs in all of football.......and you guys are talking like he's a "cancer" or ain't that good. Get real.

Didn't we trade Wayne Gandy to the Falcons a couple years ago for Bryan Scott and a draft pick?
