Dan Orlovsky about the saints and Kellen Moore (1 Viewer)

I'm not on board with giving anyone more than 2 years without a playoff appearance. If that's what we need, just hire the interim guy and fire him after we've cleaned things up.
Are you aware that 5 of 13 HoF Coaches that began their career in the playoff era could not meet that standard?
  • Chuck Noll (1-13, 5-9) - 9th All-Time for most career wins in the NFL
  • Bill Walsh (2-14, 6-10)
  • Dick Vermeil (4-10, 5-9) - originally with the Eagles and took them to the Superbowl
  • Jimmy Johnson (1-15, 7-9)
  • Marv Levy (with KC 4-12, 7-9 then with BUF 2-5, 7-8)

I think ya have to give a guy at least 3 years building his own team...2 years isn't enough, especially with the state the team is currently in. Lots of dead weight on this roster and limited means to get rid of it.

You're good with these old-time stats; the ones you cite are all at least 30 years old. I need you to update your database. Oh ya, Vermeil was fired, right but won with the Rams a decade later. Also, I said if you did not win by the second season, you're on the hot seat. I fully expect Moore to get at least three years.

Going back a bit, but Tom Landry's first six seasons with Cowboys: 0-11-1, 4-9-1, 5-8-1, 4-10, 5-8-1, and 7-7.
Chuck Noll's first three seasons with Steelers: 1-13, 5-9, and 6-8.
Bill Walsh's first two seasons with 49ers: 2-14 and 6-10.

You get the idea.
Going back like the old days

When has a franchise allowed a new coach to lose for 4 years? I am not questioning that we are facing a multi-year rebuild, but coaches don't get a pass to lose for four years.
This is what I said in this thread. Yes, I know I initially said 2 years. For the record, I don't see any coach getting three losing seasons without getting fired.
Does anyone think that will happen in today's NFL?

They have to be out of football at least 5 years to be in the HoF so they are generally older ...not my call who is or isnt in the HoF. The two most recent of the 13 qualifying HoF coaches are Tony Dungy and Bill Cowher both of which started fairly close to the 30 years ago. So that's really the best I can do.

Bill Cowher is an anomaly and was able to go to the playoffs his first year. He was the immediate predecesor of HoF Coach Chuck Noll which left him a reasonably good roster with HoFers Rod Woodson and Dermonti Dawson.

Tony Dungy struggled his first season but turned it around in year 2. His squad that he inherited from Sam Wyche had 3 HoFers on it Derrick Brooks, Warren Sapp, and John Lynch.

Vermeil struggled his first two years with the Eagles but then took them to the playoffs in the third year and followed up with a Superbowl appearance with the Eagles two years after that.

2 years later the season was shortened by a player strike. Vermeil retired after the player strike as he was burnt out. I doubt the Eagles would have ever considered firing him as he took them to the Superbowl.

He came out of retirement 15 years later and once again struggled in his first 2 seasons.

I concur, A 3-year window is a fairly accurate window for rebuilding with a new coach when your team isnt loaded up with HoFers in most historical cases. So yeah I would go with that.

Saints aren't devoid of talent, they're devoid of depth. Which has been exposed by injuries and exacerbated by cap and draft strategies. All fixable if acknowledged, and a different strategy is chosen.

Was just about to post something similar, much of the best talent on the Saints can stay healthy.....plus above....

I think they'll get rid of Grupe for the Irish guy.
I think they only do that if he is a lot better than Grupe. If they are close to even, then I think you keep Grupe as the starter and Smith on the practice squad in case something happens to Grupe. The Saints get the extra practice squad for Smith because of the international player exemption.
