Saints DE failures: will Granderson and Baun teach FO a lesson? (2 Viewers)

The toughest defenses are 3-4, Dome Patrol, Ravens, Steelers, etc. Brees had the most difficulty with 3-4 defenses. That would stop our quest for this fabled 6-5 275lb freak athlete that runs a 4.3 forty that the FO keeps looking for. Easier to fill out LBs and some big boys inside, hell, Cam Jordan even at his advanced age fits perfectly into the DE role in a 3-4. Bressee would fit as another DE, bring in a true Nose and a couple fast LBs( Baun) and we got an attacking Dline. We are at the bottom of the league in sacks because we keep drafting for this perfect sized DE that never materializes. Or just keep doing what you're doing. SMDH.
True dat, and most of our edges drafted last few seasons can’t even stay on the field. At all.

Turner
Foskey.

Would not be surprised if we end up 0-3 on that group. Still hopeful for Turner and Foskey but not confident about em.

I'm not ready to call Foskey a bust as a rookie. Let's let him grow in the system and see what he does before labeling him a bust. I'm willing to give Turner one more season to see if he can remain healthy for a whole season. He was looking real good during the preseason until he got hurt. As far as defensive scheme's, we have most of the players to run both. We still need that big NT in the middle, but I would try Mustipher there first. He's the biggest NT we have on the roster @ 325#. You could have an alignment of OLB- Baun, DE-Cam, NT- Mustipher, DE- Bresee, OLB- Granderson or Nephi Sewell. Your two ILB's could be DD & Werner with D'Marco Jackson as the backup. That would be a pretty good line-up for a 3-4.

It would be easier to staff a 3-4. We'd have our DE in Ganderson. Breese could line up as the other DE and we could find some humungous dude from Waffle House to block up the middle -- we might already have a couple. Guys like Baun and Sewell could actually contribute. And vet linebackers are a dime a dozen these days and lb are pretty easy to draft.
I don't really see the point in doing that. The majority of the game the defense is going to be in some variation of nickel or dime, that's true for pretty much every team. You're not going to have your base defense on the field much, except against certain personnel groups.

Same results since Payton left. Ireland goes too
The selection and management of talent by this organization have been poor for six years. As GM, Loomis is ultimately responsible. Certainly Payton had a huge voice in what we did before he left. Without being inside the organization, it is hard to evaluate Ireland.

Some defensive and offensive schemes allow teams to get creative without being chained to traditional size at different positions. DA's scheme is about as traditional as you can get. There is no place for tweener pass rushers. Take a guy like Micah Parsons for example. Where does he fit in DA's defense? We've seen DA get creative in the Secondary with CJG but the front seven requires prototype DEs, DTs, and LBs. And that's fine if you have the players. DA had a lot of success when the front seven was loaded. I guess we just need to assemble another all time great defense and DA will be fine.

I like that lineup, we would immediately have a pass rush.

I know the formatted text is everyone’s favorite laughter rouser or whatever, but the Davenport and Turner picks were made under Payton’s watch

The Penning pick just feels like a complete whiff on a small school project who was over rated based on metrics and overlooked slow feet. I think the glaring wish is that we could have somehow not had to make the Eagles trade and just traded other picks to move up to get Olave. Charles Cross would have been the best tackle to get who went 9th overall. Evan Neal who went 7th has not looked good for the Giants. I feel like the Penning pick is a lesson of forcing a position after the free agent loss of Armstead.

I know a guy who used to co-host Sportscenter who is now in another line of work where we overlapped.

He had a group chat thread of scouts prior to draft he'd talk with.

The second we drafted Penning, he wrote me "Biggest bust pick of first round. Chat thread unanimous that's crazy raw with bad attitude and tons to learn."

I was super pissed at the time but...

Why are we already declaring Foskey as a bust? He hasn't even finished his rookie season. By those standards, Cam Jordan would have been a bust. It's really, really hard to find good edge rushers, hence why they're some of the highest paid players in the league. I would imagine if you looked at the hit rate of most of the league on edge rushers in the 1st round it would be quite low. They're not a dime a dozen like RBs and linebackers.
Foskey has produced one noteworthy play. He was not committed to getting better in training camp. And he has zero bend.

I did a write up on Foskey back in a draft thread we had back in April. This was my opinion I gave for his negatives.

Foskey Has a tendency to play too high and with poor balance and power. He'll lose ground at the point of attack and he doesn't the the full benefit of his length. He is more fast than he is quick and as a result struggles to adjust if his initial move doesn't work. At times Foskey can be taken out of the play on run downs by running directly at him. He will still need to add strength, which could limit his upside as a complete player. I'm still not ready to call him a bust yet. let's see if he makes any progressions from this season to the next. I would like to see what he could do in an odd front as a rush end/OLB.
