Saints DE failures: will Granderson and Baun teach FO a lesson? (1 Viewer)

Ireland scouts players and submits his evaluations to the Head Coach and GM for them to then review and decide who they want to draft.

The burden of responsibility for the picks is the Head Coach and GM.
And the picks were not bad picks, they just have not worked out and that's to no fault of the player personnel department, GM or Head Coach.

You expect our coaching staff to.... learn? That doesn't sound like 'keep doing what you're doing' to me.

The draft is a lottery, always has been, always will be. The Saints do the best they can but at the end of the day it is all a crapshoot.

The 32nd pick of the 2017 NFL draft is a perfect example.

Reuben Foster, the guy the Saints originally wanted, is a bust.

Ryan Ramcyzk, the guy the Saints "settled" for, had a three year run as the best Right Tackle in the league.

Tbf he can point the staff in the direction of talented players, but he can’t coach the players to reach their potential.
True but you do make a recommendation that's not based solely on physical traits. I'm sure there's something in their about work ethic or injury history.

If you have to take something away from a person then they are what your trying to take away from them.
Look, despite my exaggerated takes, I don't think we need to fire everyone. However, we've looking for Cam's replacement for a few years now. Dav is gone and Turner is almost always hurt.
Penning is looking like a reach and Ruiz is meh. If we were talking about mid-round picks, it would be no big deal. First round guys are expected to be starters at the minimum and I don't we should overlook those picks; particularly the evaluation that came from the FO.

The toughest defenses are 3-4, Dome Patrol, Ravens, Steelers, etc. Brees had the most difficulty with 3-4 defenses. That would stop our quest for this fabled 6-5 275lb freak athlete that runs a 4.3 forty that the FO keeps looking for. Easier to fill out LBs and some big boys inside, hell, Cam Jordan even at his advanced age fits perfectly into the DE role in a 3-4. Bressee would fit as another DE, bring in a true Nose and a couple fast LBs( Baun) and we got an attacking Dline. We are at the bottom of the league in sacks because we keep drafting for this perfect sized DE that never materializes. Or just keep doing what you're doing. SMDH.
Two of top defenses this are 4/3. Browns and Cowboys

The Saints aren’t that far from a good team. Pig headed denial by the coaching staff seems to be the cause. When coaches don’t inspire dissent and low morale sets in and teams lose heart. If somehow inspiration in heart are reignited the team may finish with a winning record. However, my gut tells me the leaks in this boat cant be plugged.

Turner has not been healthy only playing 14 games in three seasons if he does not come back at the end of this year. He has 3 total sacks and 29 tackles. We took Turner at 28 overall over Greg Rosseau who went 30th to the Bills who was universally ranked higher. People had Turner as maybe a 2nd round but more like a third on all the national spots when we took Turner. Rosseau over the same span played in 42 games with 16.5 total sacks and 119 combined tackles.

We took Peter Werner in the second round at 60. As far as who else was on the board who went in round 2. There is not a whole lot of great players taken outside the top 15. I think we wanted Zaven Collins at LB who went to the Cardinals at 16th if he would have fallen and probably tired to trade up and failed to get Jaycee Horn at CB who went 8th to the Panthers. We did much better getting Paulson Adebo in the third round at 76.

The Penning pick just feels like a complete whiff on a small school project who was over rated based on metrics and overlooked slow feet. I think the glaring wish is that we could have somehow not had to make the Eagles trade and just traded other picks to move up to get Olave. Charles Cross would have been the best tackle to get who went 9th overall. Evan Neal who went 7th has not looked good for the Giants. I feel like the Penning pick is a lesson of forcing a position after the free agent loss of Armstead.
