Derek Carr won’t take a pay cut for 2025 but willing to restructure to help the cap (55 Viewers)

For everyone saying cut him, it’s not that simple.

With his hand injury we cannot cut him until he can pass a physical, if that happens after March 14th or so then he has another guaranteed 40 million for his salary and roster bonus this season.

There’s also the issue of the dead money. If we cut Carr then we are basically forced to restructure guys like Cam, DD, Tyrann etc. If you want to move on from those guys then you have to restructure Carr in order to free up the money to get under the cap.

I think he should take a cut and it’s not about his play. It’s about his inability to stay healthy. We’ve lost every game he’s missed or gotten knocked out of the past two years except the giants game where he got knocked out with a lead and under two mins to play. It’s a credit to him that we can’t win without him but the injuries are too frequent for him to be getting full pay.
The injuries are exactly why he shouldn't. The guy has been beaten to hell since arriving in New Orleans, the fan base impossible, and he's got his future to think about.

He wouldn’t adjust his contract for the team that drafted him, not a surprise that he won’t do it here. It’s just crazy to me that we essentially gave him $100m guaranteed after he was coming off a bad year on a contract that only paid $25m guaranteed. Everyone can say the deal was average, but an average deal can still be an overpay if no one else is out there bidding.

Would you said the same thing about Nick Foles, Brad Johnson, Trent Dillfer, Joe Flacco, Jimmy Garopplo, Kaepernick, Rex Grossman, Matt Hasselback, Jake Delhomme , Rich Gannon, Kerry Collins, Brock Purdy???

Is that enough names??? I never understand how people can say a QB will NEVER take us anywhere when there are so many examples of non elite QBs making it and winning the SB
Great point, and one that's mired in complexity and context. I love the recognition that the right group of guys, in the right circumstance, can find magic that leads to a real championship run. That's the nature and appeal of team sport.

I guess the issue is probably that those dozen names didn't consistently put their team in position to win it all, and if you look at each of those dozen careers, you'd find plenty of years where they got nowhere near being that level of competitor and contributor.

The consistent ones are who you search for, but sometimes the 'circumstance one' is enough, although often only for a limited period.

Fine, don’t restructure him and pay him. Develop Rattler in the background. As soon as he’s not playing up to his contract bench him and then cut him in 2026.

He’s going to be an expensive 1 year tutor
I sometimes wonder where we would be today if we kept Dalton one year longer and brought in Kubiak one year sooner.

In hindsight that was the move. Dalton + Winston, or another budget QB like Darnold, and continue clearing cap space/drafting. Not exciting but is what needed to be done to become a contender.

If you have talent on your team, you can survive a year with an extreme amount of dead cap against your salary if you were to part with a big contract. Denver did it this year, with $89 Million of dead money against their salary. The issue the Saints face, is they don't have that much of a talented roster. We're in a bad spot with the roster and with the cap. We may have to just embrace the suck for a while.

Carr knows the people that wanted him and signed him are gone. He knows the fan base has had it in for him from the beginning. He knows the team is in a bad position financially and will have to guarantee him more money to get under the cap before March 15th when $40 mil will be guaranteed automatically. And that the team can't do much about it. Loomis did this and will have to suck it up and either admit that the team is clearing cap all in one year or tuck his tail and pay the man. Carr acts all nice, churchy and clean, but he knows exactly what he's doing.
Yes, it's called business and he is being a business man. simple as that
