Do you have ambition to live or retire abroad? (14 Viewers)

Try even earlier, since at least the 1980s .

You are incorrect…. Sure, no place is perfect, that part is true.. but the minor trivial bs ‘problems’ here in Asia pale in comparison to the issues that America and the West is experiencing … What you are wrong about is the reason that everyone doesnt do it.. it’s not b/c it’s ’too good to be true’, it’s because most Americans are fat, lazy, addicted to being miserable and cant imagine ever leaving the Yankee Doodle Dandy bullcrap we’ve been fed all our lives for something “unknown”…. Personally ill take my chances on what’s ’unknown’ 100 times over the ‘known’ miserable quality of life in America….. I think last i read something like 80% of Americans dont even have a passport (dont quote me on that exact number)- so why would they ever look beyond US shores for a better life ??
Wasn’t talking about you sunshine. I was mentioning those since the 80’s like you referenced. It has been a thing for years and pretty a known thing in the military. No secret. I’m sure it’s great for you. Just saying, you are not living some secret lifestyle nobody knows about. The modern military is very aware of what they could have in Asia

about 45 minutes nw of melbourne. i'd personally take it over sydney, but if you love your austin, you would probably like it better. melbourne is a combo of nj, ny, and several boring arse cities. at least sydney has culture, but i'd prefer the simple life of bogans.

also, you mentioned london earlier. i'd take it in a heartbeat. i was there for 3 months at 10 years old, went to primary school, and even with that not being a vacation, i loved everything i saw in england and scotland.

@CapitalCitySaint fwiw i have not done as much international travel as you have .. ironically the only two places ive been outside of America (besides Canada) ive been in my life are the two absolute farthest places a human can fly from America- Australia , and Asia… and even more ironically, I despise flying with the white hot passion of 1000 suns… i have not been to Europe, or South America or the Caribbean - i have never even been to Mexico ! But what i would tell you is that , for me, it’s not worth the 25 plus hours (give or take) of flying you need to do to get to Sydney, or even Melbourne, just to experience another big city and take pics of a bridge and an opera house… just not worth it, imo .

I mean i agree with you but just chose to start my post with my knowledge of it. I don’t exactly know the history of when Thailand became a place for retired military guys to retire . Sorry man, please let me know the exact date

ETA but i thank all that is holy that people like urself think the way you do, b/c if not, then you’d be correct that places like Asia would be overrun with loud, entitled Americans .
Glad i could contribute to your fantasy

Speaking of. I know a lot about the life down in Phuket. I wasn’t there but have many stories from friends and one of my best friends has a daughter there.

I still am grateful i never deployed there. I might still be there based on everyones stories

Trust me when i tell you that you are missing nothing with Phuket.. it was the first place i ever went in Asia, about 18 months ago (w/the exception of a few days layover in Bangkok) and i found it extremely crowded and congested, all while paying American prices.. Krabi is at the top of my list to visit, hopefully in the next few months.. Lived in Chiang Mai for a couple months and it was ok, but limiting due to lack of decent public transport (i dont do motos)…. Im living in Bangkok now for the last six months almost (Thong Lor district near the city center) and what you said is so true, esp in re to Bangkok- it has something for everyone and is truly whatever you want to make it… if you’re ever back around here and want to grab a plate of mango sticky rice, let me know . (y)
Yeah, Chiang Mai would be difficult without a motorbike. I’ll hyu the next time I’m headed to BKK.

While I doubt I would ever completely move and retire abroad, looking at the cost of living in some of those locals, I could see an extended vacation in an area. Once retired, who cares if you are gone for a month? Definitely something to consider......and I'm approaching that retirement window. Just got to stay healthy.

After Vietnam. Thailand was and probably still is more popular with Australians and Europeans. When I was there it was mostly people from those countries, with some Americans, but that number has grown.

The Philippines used to be extremely popular, especially when we had a bases there, but 39 ended that so now it's a lot of the older crowd who is still around since then and others who have moved over. There's also a lot of Australians there as well. Koreans have a huge presence in the Philippines mainly for some of the Universities. If they can't get into one in Korea, they go down to the PI, especially the Bagio area.

The Koreans have quite a few businesses in the PI as the Americans have moved out after the base closed in 1991 when Mt. Pinatubo erupted. The Filipinos like it better when Americans had a larger presence and businesses as they money would go back into the local economy, the Koreans take the money back to Korean.

I am retired AF and can live at my compound for minimal cost since we already own it. We choose to live in the US right now b/c we have good jobs and all of the kids are in the states, if we move over there, I highly doubt they'd visit due to the cost and time off requirement. My wife really misses her family there around the holidays and nobody is getting younger, so I do think we'll be there at some point, whether it is full time or not is TBD.

We've thought about Thailand and Vietnam as well, but with us already having a place in the PI and her family is there, it makes sense just to go there.

‘39’?

I’m typing this from Laos. Yesterdsy Cambodia, spent the last two months in Japan, Korea and mostly Thailand.

It is hard to come home and makes less sense each time I do. I have no clue where I will end up but I do know it wont be in the USA.

I’m a wealthy god in SE Asia. In the USA I’m just cattle lining up for slaughter. No doubt the US is wonderful and does some great stuff but from a perspective of cost, life and freedom it is a really difficult place to live.

This.

I love the US and everything it has to offer, but sometimes I just want to live a more simple life with no stress. I can do that in the PI.
