Scientists have established a new research “hub” dedicated to preparing for the discovery of alien life, an event that would finally answer the age-old question of whether we are alone in the universe.

While it’s not clear that we will ever find life beyond Earth, or that aliens exist at all, the consequences of finding extraterrestrials would have immense and dizzying implications for humanity no matter what form it might take.

The search for extraterrestrial intelligence (SETI)—along with the broader quest to find even simple forms of life, like bacteria—has become extremely sophisticated, raising the odds that we might actually stumble across evidence of aliens in the coming decades, assuming it is really out there.

John Elliott, who serves as honorary research fellow in the School of Computer Science of the University of St Andrews in Scotland, has been thinking about the potential ramifications of an alien detection for decades.

During his long involvement with the SETI Permanent Committee, a group of SETI experts established by the International Academy of Astronautics (IAA), he has developed approaches for deciphering extraterrestrial messages and gamed out how to disseminate information about a confirmed extraterrestrial detection to a global audience.

Now, Elliott has founded the SETI Post-Detection Hub, hosted by the University of St Andrews’ Centre for Exoplanet Science and the Centre for Global Law and Governance, to bring together diverse experts and anticipate the joys and tribulations of a post-detection world.

“It was increasingly evident that we needed a center (home) to coordinate our efforts for an integrated provision to deal with such an event,” Elliott told Motherboard in an email. “So, with the encouragement of colleagues, I took the initiative and began developing the hub, to where it is now.”

“This has been with the assistance of a few colleagues in the UK SETI Network (UKSRN), to formulate a draft strategic plan and supporting documents,” he added, noting that the hub is now officially active.

The establishment of the center is one of many signs that the existing protocols addressing extraterrestrial detections are likely to come into sharper focus in the near future.

The SETI Permanent Committee adopted a basic game plan for this event in 1989, but many researchers think these guidelines haven’t kept pace with rapid advances in the media landscape and in the search for extraterrestrial life itself.

Two teams of researchers have also recently debated the wisdom of preparing for security risks to SETI researchers and astronomical facilities, including terrorist attacks or espionage...........

.... including terrorist attacks or espionage...........
I could see this being a problem if it ever happens. We have people here that deny everything from election results to the existence of space. I could also see religious extremists causing problems as well. It's probably a good idea to update the 1989 guidelines!

The ODNI was required by Congress to release a UFO report by Oct 31, 2022. They still haven't released it, now they are saying that it will be out sometime this month.

zero doubt

It would be an extremist and conspiracy theorists wonderland

A new office at the Pentagon is scrutinizing hundreds of reports of unidentified objects in air, sea, space and beyond, senior U.S. defense officials said Friday, and while it has discovered no signs of alien life, the search is set to expand.

The issue has taken on increasing seriousness as a bipartisan group of lawmakers presses the Defense Department to investigate instances of unidentified phenomena and disclose publicly what they learn.

Established in July, the All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office is evaluating recent reports and soon could evaluate accounts that date back decades, officials said.

The Pentagon’s top intelligence official, Ronald Moultrie, told reporters during a news conference, the first to discuss the office and its ongoing work, that “At this time … we have nothing” to affirm the existence of space aliens.

The proliferation of drones, including those operated by foreign adversaries and amateur hobbyists, account for many of the reports, officials said.
“Some of these things almost collide with planes,” said Sean Kirkpatrick, the director of the new office, who spoke to the media alongside Moultrie on Friday. “We see that on a regular basis.”

The U.S. government employs sophisticated sensors around the globe to collect data, and the office analyzes it for relevant information, they said, declining to elaborate.

While most of the reports the Pentagon investigates are about aerial objects, defense officials are increasingly concerned about unusual activity below the surface of the ocean, in space and on land.

For that reason, the Pentagon now uses the term unidentified anomalous phenomena, or UAP, rather than previous descriptions such as “unidentified flying object.”……..

Yeh, those drones were a big problem back in the 40s and 50s…

They said a couple of weeks ago that the next UAP report will be out by the end of the year.

So they will probably release it Friday while the media is all in a tizzy about something else that is being released on Friday, so no one will pay attention to the UFO topic.

Curious if this report will give anymore information, that last one was a real let down and that was after the DoD footage. Ive spent a good bit of time amateur researching (gazing) at the Skinwalker Ranch, I spent over a year working that general area and at least every other week I would go spend hours at night just watching. Below is a video that one of the true researchers filmed when myself and co-workers met with them one night out at the ranch, that was the weirdest experience I ever had out there. There were columns of lights either shooting down or up from the ground, not bright but visible light, the dudes night vision camera caught it the best it could. The other most notable experience was a couple of co-workers didnt listen to me when I told them NOT to apporach the gate, they got there before me and got bored, well they were chased by security.

I have been listening to the Alien State podcast, not through with it but the host does a pretty good job, he is on the theory of follow the money. Listening to the parts about Skinwalker Ranch, Bob Bigelow, seems like he never really investigated anything but for pocketing DoD money.

Yea, i don't trust Bigelow or anything about Skinwalker ranch.

Steven Greenstreet has been doing a good look at Skinwalker.

If you guys are expecting something groundbreaking in the upcoming report, I hate to break the news that it will be sanitized, just like the last one. The real info will be distributed later at a classified meeting with senators. All we will hear is that there are objects that we can't identify, classify, or explain and we will step up our methods to do this.

No, I really don't, but wishful thinking. I agree with you it will be watered down with the same narrative as always.

As someone who is a fan or deeply moved by long, freeform psychedelic late 60's elemental "space rock" jams or songs and in honor of the topic matter relayed, discussed in this thread, I shall allow you to determine if we should be allowed to see more light:

The US government is examining 510 UFO reports, more than triple the number in its 2021 file. While many were caused by drones or balloons, hundreds remain unexplained, according to a report released on Thursday.

The 2022 report (pdf) by the Director of National Intelligence (DNI) said that 247 “unidentified anomalous phenomena” or UAP reports have been filed with it since June 2021, when it revealed that it had records of 144 sightings of suspicious aerial objects under examination.

In addition, the report said, another 119 reports that had been buried in old records from the past 17 years had been unearthed, leaving it with 510 in total.

Most of the new reports come from US navy and air force pilots, it said.

Of those, close to 200 had “unremarkable” explanations: they were balloons, drones or so-called aerial clutter, which covers birds, weather events and airborne plastic bags.

But others have not been explained according to the DNI document, an unclassified version of a report delivered to Congress……

A new machine learning method has found eight previously undetected “signals of interest” in the search for alien life, scientists say.

Those signals of interest – coming from five stars relatively near to Earth – could possibly be indications of alien intelligence on other worlds, they say.

And those targets – and others like them – mean that artificial intelligence could allow us to finally find signals of life beyond Earth, according to researchers.

Much of the hunt for extraterrestrial intelligence looks for “technosignatures”, or signals that could have come from alien technology, accidentally or on purpose…..:
