It might sound like something that's purely science fiction, but it's a legitimate and busy area of scientific research. Astronomers are attempting to find signs that intelligent life might exist out in the universe beyond Earth. The search for extraterrestrial intelligence, or SETI, is a field that has one huge primary challenge, and that's the sheer size of space. Even if there are other civilizations out there, the gulf between galaxies is so large that signals would take millions of years to travel between them.

So to have any hope of finding indications of intelligent life, scientists need to look through an enormous amount of data. Searching as much of the sky as possible, investigating as many cosmic objects as possible, in the hope of finding one that could indicate intelligent life elsewhere.

The typical approach to SETI is to look for what are called technosignatures, which are indications of the use of technology. That includes things like radio waves, which would look different when produced by technological sources as opposed to natural ones. It could involve looking for particular chemicals which are typically pollutants caused by technology such as chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs). And somewhat more outlandish is to look for evidence of advanced technology that humans haven't built yet but have conceived of, such as Dyson spheres which are imagined structures around stars used to harvest energy.

Even with this approach in hand, though, SETI researchers are still facing the numbers problem. They need to comb through huge quantities of data to look for these indicators.

To help with the search for technosignatures, researchers are now making use of the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA), a set of 28 massive radio dishes located in New Mexico. These multiple dishes, or antennae, work together to form the equivalent of a single, enormous antenna, allowing them to detect faint signals from distant objects. Each dish is 82 feet across, holds eight receivers, and is mounted on a tripod-style mount which allows it to move and tilt to point at desired objects.

The VLA has a cutting-edge detector called the Commensal Open-Source Multimode Interferometer Cluster (COSMIC) from the SETI Institute, which is specifically designed for SETI research. Described in a paper in The Astronomical Journal, this is a digital tool that can search for technosignatures in a much more comprehensive and efficient way than previous tools, allowing researchers to process large amounts of data more quickly. It is also designed to enable the VLA to be used for other science research while performing its SETI work.

"The COSMIC system greatly enhances the VLA's scientific capabilities. Its main goal of detecting extraterrestrial technosignatures addresses one of the most profound scientific questions ever. This topic was previously not possible with the VLA," said Dr. Paul Demorest of the National Radio Astronomy Observatory. "By operating in parallel with projects such as the VLA Sky Survey, COSMIC will accomplish one of the largest SETI surveys ever while still allowing the VLA to carry out its usual program of other astronomical research.".............

"Commensal Open-Source Multimode Interferometer Cluster (COSMIC)"...this really sounds like something out of a Buck Rogers episode.

There is another hearing on November 13. No one will be paying attention to a lame duck congress having a UFO hearing a week after an election that we probably still won't know who won.

That is a shame, because that hearing is going to be wild.

Independent journalist Michael Shellenberger told NewsNation a whistleblower has revealed the existence of an alleged Pentagon UFO program called “Immaculate Constellation.”

Shellenberger told NewsNation’s Ross Coulthart about the whistleblower report, which comes on the heels of similar allegations from former Air Force intelligence officer David Grusch and former Pentagon employee Lue Elizondo.

Here’s what we know about the program so far.

I think Bigelow is in the middle of all this and knows more than we think....

A New York City mother of two whose controversial story of being abducted by aliensfrom her downtown apartment made global headlines says Netflix portrayed her as a fabulist in an upcoming docuseries and hopes to block it from ever being released.

Linda Napolitano, who first told her story under the pseudonym Linda Cortile, has long claimed three gray bipedal beings extracted her during the wee hours of November 30, 1989, from her 12th-floor window on a blue beam of light, lifting her onto a reddish-orange spacecraft that quickly sped off toward the Brooklyn Bridge.

Late artist-toss custard-UFO investigator Budd Hopkins championed Napolitano’s story in the 1997 book Witnessed: The True Story of the Brooklyn Bridge Abduction, generating widespread interest and, naturally, some skepticism.

Hopkins said he became further convinced Napolitano was telling the truth after he received a letter from two bodyguards who said they had been nearby protecting an unnamed “world leader” when they saw a woman floating through the night sky into an alien spacecraft.

More than 20 other witnesses claimed that they, too, witnessed Napolitano’s purported abduction.

Now, Napolitano, 77, is trying to block Netflix from releasing its take on the supposed incident, The Manhattan Alien Abduction, set to premiere on Wednesday, claiming it presents “a tale of skepticism” and an examination of Napolitano’s “pulling the wool over [Hopkins’s] eyes,” rather than a credulous recitation of her claims, according to an eyepopping lawsuit obtained by The Independent.

“A woman claims to have been abducted from her bedroom in Manhattan,” a Netflix promo reads. “This docuseries explores whether it was an elaborate hoax — or proof of alien life.”………

It's about to get better! 😎

Or we're going to find out if aliens taste good.

Also, The Kevin Jenkins Experience. Seriously, it's a great read/shared universe. (At least up until The Deathworlders chapter 70 or so, when it goes off the rails)

The United States Congress will hold a hearing on Wednesday to discuss the topic of UFOs that some lawmakers are hopeful will lead to new information on a subject that is the focus of many conspiracy theorists but has also recently attracted serious attention from government officials.

The House oversight committee’s hearing will be titled Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena: Exposing the Truth. The title refers to UAPs, the new preferred acronym for UFOs, which has become an increasingly popular term among believers – and US officials – to describe mysterious airborne objects.

The hearing will be the second congressional hearing the US Congress has put together in order to “further pull back the curtain on secret UAP research programs conducted by the US government, and undisclosed findings they have yielded”, according to a House statement.

The hearing will be led by Republican representatives Nancy Mace and Glenn Grothman. The representatives argue in the House’s statement that Americans are frustrated with the lack of transparency by the US government on the topic of UAPs.

“Americans deserve to understand what the government has learned about UAP sightings, and the nature of any potential threats these phenomena pose. We can only ensure that understanding by providing consistent, systemic transparency. We look forward to hearing from expert witnesses on ways to shed more light and bring greater accountability to this issue,” Mace and Grothman said in the statement.

Luis Elizondo, a decorated former counterintelligence officer who has claimed for years that the US government is hiding knowledge of UAPs, will be an expert witness at the hearing.

Wednesday’s hearing comes more than a year after the Pentagon was accused of running a secret UFO retrieval program by whistleblower David Grusch, though no evidence has ever emerged to back up these claims.……..

So wild I ducked off into documentary just last night about USO (submerged ) and "fast movers" underwater.

They are either skunk works type craft or indeed alien intelligent life.

Toward end one guy, I think was paleoarchiologist, put forth his theory that the "Grey men" are us. From future. He took evolution and put in computer simulation with our skeletal features from cromagnon til now and the simulation has our facial features just like the Grey's.

Wild hypothesis.

Made me think of Interstellar.
