Does anyone have a parent who is a hoarder? (1 Viewer)

There are hipsters who would pay big $ for some of that stuff optimus

Not to make a joke out of your frustration…

My dad was the same way
Katrina cleared his garage out for us
He quit hoarding after the storm

Yeah the weekend I took my daughter to college a pipe broke in my house. After gutting the back 2/3 of my house and tossing all the water damaged stuff, it was so much more clean and open

I’ve mentioned this in other threads but my mother got involved in a dog rescue program and she can’t control it. She has to say yes to every one of them. It is in relative control these days but at one point I couldn’t even go to her house anymore. Like it was mentioned about general hoarding it’s a deep emotional thing. Like trying to fill a bottomless hole in your heart. Rescue is a beautiful thing but it isn’t for everyone.

I am a digital hoarder I guess. I have a stack of hard drives but I suppose that’s a very contained hoarding.

I have a friend who rescues dogs. One time I was there she had her two cats, two pitbulls, a Chihuahua rescue, and another pit with paralyzed, rear legs.

She's had situations where the dogs don't get along and she has to put them in separate rooms and they eat the walls and doors.

She jumped into a fight with three pits and ended up with permanent nerve damage to her hands. I called her while she was still getting treated and she was crying her eyes out. Not because of her injuries, but because she was afraid that she was going to lose the dogs.

It's a rewarding, and necessary job/hobby. I admire her for it. But it's as much an addiction as hoarding.

Funny this reappeared. My mom passed in April, and I had to clean out her house June-July. Had a 25x12 dump trailer I filled twice, plus a couple other loads in my truck and probably 5 loads to Salvation Army. That’s not counting the furniture and dads woodworking stuff I kept. 5.5 tons of junk is what I removed if I remember correctly. This is out of a 980 square foot house with a basement. Absolutely insane
So sorry to hear about your mom

and did those ’56 encyclopedias end up being worth anything?

At least my Dad comes by it honestly, his mother was a hoarder too

Her house in New Orleans had a hip deep pile of years old newspapers, magazines, etc. in most of the house

There was a path to walk and get to the bed and that’s about it

I remember telling my cousin that if anyone ever dropped a match in there the whole house was going up like a flare

Katrina finally forced a clean out

OOOH, glad I saw this. I am convinced that a certain item I would like to get will only be found in a hoarders house. I have searched everywhere else yard sales, junk stores, goodwill, ebay, etc...) and can not find it. I smoke but do not carry a purse. The item I am looking for is a cigarette case with places for money, drivers license, credit cards and the like.. A friend gave me my first one about 20 years ago, and I found one several years ago on ebay, but can't locate another. Its the kind of thing you would give a smoker if you didn't know what else to get them as a gift(which is how my friend got hers that she gave to me. However-a hoarder would keep it-just in case.... So, when you're cleaning out these places and come across one--keep me in mind Thanks

My mamere had a few of these
Sorry, we didn’t keep any

If you asked my kids this they'd say "yes". I throw very little away but I also don't pile it up everywhere. Like scrap pieces of wood, metal, or wire. I keep all of that but I had a place and stays there until I can use it. Every now and then I'll clean out some stuff I've found no use for but usually I can find a use for things before it gets too piled up anywhere.

My oldest sister is/was a hoarder. She lived in a 3 bdrm home that we all grew up in. She worked at JCPenney for years and would get clothing for next to nothing. Her home ended up being stacked with crap through out and there was barely an aisle left to walk from kitchen to living rm to her bedroom. Most of the crap was clothing that still had the price tag on them. It was very bad until she decided to move in with her son and DIL in Colorado. They will keep her under control because it is their home, not hers.
My dad isn't a hoarder, but there are certain things he likes to hold onto, even though they no longer serve a purpose. I have a shed full of crap right now that I wish I could get rid of.
I have an update as well. My dad passed away a few months ago and I've been going thru his things. Some of it I can't even bring myself to throw out, some of it was just junk. I've made several trips to the parish dump and to the local charity places. Still have a lot of stuff, maybe one day I'll get rid of all of it.
Also, my sister is no longer happy living with her son in Colorado so she will be moving into my spare bedroom. She is a recent breast cancer survivor and I think her son and DIL are mistreating her. I'm headed that way tomorrow to pack her up and bring her back here. She wants to bring so much stuff that isn't needed, like kitchenware and appliances that I already have. It's going to be an ordeal, I'm sure, but she will definitely not turn my house into what her old house was. My house isn't nearly as spacious as her old home so she will have to be frugal/picky with what she keeps here.

I have 5 old PCs sitting in my storage right now. Probably 3 of them would boot up if you plugged them in today. One of them is basically unused because I was getting a RAM error when booting it up and could never clear it. I finally gave up and just purchased one already built.

I had several full computers too until COVID. One of my projects during that time was organizing old pics etc. I bought one of these and just too the hard drives out of them. Works a charm
