Dolphins sign Saints FA LB Willie Gay Jr. to 1-year deal (10 Viewers)

Yea Werner isn’t a guy who will lose you a game like some infamous Saints of the past (FS Bullocks, CB David/Browner, LB Anthony) and I do think he is an above average LB overall who plays consistently above average. He just doesn’t pop out nor does he dominate in any one area of the game, so that contract was a little confusing. The only thing I can assume is that he was one of DA’s guys.

If only Werner wore #55, some lower arm half sleeves on both arms, and an arm band on his right bicep, with a visor, and got a bit more hyped and beat his chest and point at the sky after making routine tackles, his life and how we perceive him would be completely different. 😂

He was only $3M against last year's cap, but it's still another past waste of money and roster spot by Dennis Allen. When anyone is talking up Pete Werner as a way of rationalizing the loss of Willie Gay Jr., then that's a problem. Pete Werner does not scare any OC in the league. Ooh, we better gameplan away from Pete Werner, said no OC ever.

I don't think anyone claimed that Werner scared OCs or forced OCs to change their game plans. He's just a steady LB that is usually in position and usually makes the plays he is supposed to. He's an above average LB and happens to be better than Willie Gay. You would certainly like a better WLB (to the extent that is what he plays in the new scheme) and maybe that will happen soon, but for now, Werner is not close to our biggest issue on defense.

But, how many 4-3 WLBs in the NFL do scare OCs in the NFL or force OCs to change their game plan?

Went and looked up who the LB coach was last year. His name is Michael Hodges. He's now in Cincinnati.

The Saints failing to either properly draft, position or develop their linebackers made total sense when I discovered where Coach Hodges played his college ball.

tA&M really does live rent free in your head.

Yeah. I was hoping for bigger things from Gay and Cedric Wilson and it never materialized for whatever reasons. Wish him the best in Miami. At least it's not to a division team like Onyemata, Tuttle or Elliss.

In his latest mock, Daniel Jeremiah has us picking Jihaad Campbell.

Not as far fetched as most would think. It all depends on who's available. But it would be a good pick.

When you pick that early, you need to grab a difference maker. Jihaad Campbell is a guy you will your defence around. He will be the quarterback of the unit.

I am not defending or against this as a possible pick. Just food for thought.

i don’t want a contributor…I want a superstar. I want a player that doesn’t fit a scheme…I want a player that you build a scheme around. Not saying that Campbells not that guy, but that’s what we need

It's a particularly interesting pick in our new scheme because that Slot CB position is often called the "Star" position because it's used to move all over the field and sometimes play as a pseudo LB. It's a position where you need a guy to make plays and getting the best guy available at that position would make a lot of sense. I would really like to see Taylor moved back to the slot because I don't think he has played well as an outside CB, but maybe Staley thinks he a fit outside in his scheme and maybe he doesn't think he's a fit in the Slot? Although we do know that the Saints tried to sign a starting outside CB in free agency, so that would indicate to me that they see either Taylor or Kool-Aid moving to the Slot.

Apparently you

That would be great, but we are going to have to have some luck for that kind of player to fall to #9.

Close, aggy lives rent-free in their own head.

It's 2025 and while a co-ed school, they still have their turdition of only having male cheerleaders, called Yell Leaders. I want the Saints coaches to come from places that are more well-rounded. How about you?

Trust me, I find just about everything A&M does hilarious. I've just never understood why UT people bother with them when you clearly have the better school, better city, better sports program, and the lack of weird and "cringe" traditions like Yell Leaders, etc.

As far as coaches and players, I guess I tend to think they have little to do with all that stuff. They are either good players/coaches or they are not. I don't much care what school they came from. I'd certainly like to have De'Von Achane and as much as I liked watching Lattimore punk him, Mike Williams, right now.

And I like Eric McCoy right where he is.

Yes there are outlier players who are helpful to a football team, like McCoy, Von Miller, Myles Garrett.

Would've loved Achane, but the Saints chose Kendre Miller off an ACL tear in the Championship game 13 spots earlier than Achane.

Ignore aggy? Unpossible in my town. Two huge aggy flags on my street alone. Another reason I don't want the Saints normalizing them by doing things like hiring corches from there.

He had almost as many TFL & he had more sacks than Werner in a lot less snaps played.
He has pretty good stats for the amount of snaps played on D...
He isn't leaving NOLA feeling good about how he was used here...

I’m sure he’s not however he saw fewer plays bc he’s a liability in coverage and since majority of teams are throwing more than they rush his # of snaps makes more sense.

TCUDan said after some games last year that Werner executed his assignments better than any of the other LB's, including Davis. Coaches place a really high value on consistent assignment execution. Some fans don't value that consistency as highly as they value making the occasional flashy play.
