Dome Team = Offensive Team (20 Viewers)

Brees would have 3-4 rings if we gave him the defense he needed. We wouldn't have lost to the 9ers, Rams, or Vikings in the post season. We need balance. A defensive minded coach needs a good OC, an offensive minded coach needs a good DC.

And it’s a lot easier to find and hold a good DC than it is OC. I’ll name the good DCs out there looking for work right now. DA, Saleh, Eberflus, Anarumo. Steve Wilks, Rex Ryan. Now name all of the good OCs out there looking for a job as OC.

Now think of the number of teams in danger of losing their OC to head coaching jobs right now. Eagles, Bills, Lions, Commanders, Giants, Chiefs, Cardinals, Steelers, Ravens, Texans Bucs OCs are all interviewing. That’s over 1/3 of the OCs in the league.

For defense it’s just the Lions, Dolphins, Vikings, Chiefs, and Broncos. 1/6 of the league DCs.

Defensive ranking is a greater determinant in SB wins than offensive ranking. History is littered with high flying offenses that got beaten in Super Bowls.

History or recent history? The game has changed to favor the offense.

I should have said correlation rather than determinant, but currently unable to edit.

My point is not that a defensive HC is required, so much as that an offensive coach isn't the cast iron solution so many seem to think.

Yet of 14 playoff teams this season, only six have an offensive head coach. Of eight division winners, only three have an offensive head coach (if you want to call Dan Campbell an offensive head coach, even though he isn’t known as a play caller).

Look it up and tell me. My sig is based on a period up to about 5 years ago IIRC.

Oh I’m not saying you win the Super Bowl with great offense and bad defense. But you aren’t winning it with great defense and mediocre offense either. The Steelers can make the playoffs with their current structure but they will not win a Super Bowl.

How many of the “non-offensive HC’s” are on my list of being in danger of losing their OCs? Probably almost all of them.

Eagles, Ravens, Bills, Steelers, Lions, Texans, Commanders, Bucs OCs all interviewing for HC jobs. Have fun sustaining success.

I'm glad you aren't. But the fact remains that a great offense loses in the Super Bowl more often than a team with a great defense.

I don’t think winning a Super Bowl should be the metric for determining a “winning” team. There is only one per year and we know that it is usually won by the best QB (QB playing the best at the time), plain and simple.

So, if we take this year’s playoff teams, and remove the 3 teams with generational QB’s (Mahommes, Allen, Jackson) because getting one of those isn’t a simple process, what commonalities are we left with?

8 of the 11 playoff teams have an Oline ranked in top 12 in the league by PFF. (The Cardinals were 7th and missed the playoffs). This doesn’t mean you have to have 1st round draft picks or high $ free agents on your team to win, but you darn sure better have the right players for your system.

There does seem to be a small numerical advantage to having an offensive minded head coach, but I don’t think it is across the board. What I do see is that if you have a “limited” QB, you are better off with an offensive minded head coach. If you have a #1 or #2 overall pick playing QB, a defensive minded head coach seems to work. This makes sense when you look at the Brady/Belicheck & Manning/Dungy models. If your QB is good, help him out. If he is great, leave him the heck alone and focus on stopping the other team.

Your QB needs to have enough pocket presence and escapability to pick up a first down on a busted 3rd & 6 play. Only 3 of the playoff QBs are not at least somewhat mobile.

You have to have a reasonable performer at all of the offensive skill positions. You can’t have a gaping hole somewhere or it allows the defense to gain a little too much advantage over the offense. Trautman in Denver was really the only “hole” for any of the playoff teams at WR1, TE, or RB1.

So where does this leave the Saints? I’d say the Saints best bet is getting an offensive minded head coach to install his scheme (that fits our Oline) for Rattler to take over in 2026. At best, this solves the QB issue and at worst it saves money to continue building the team. High value resources should be spent on defensive players, with the exception of adding 1 top-tier offensive weapon so that the resulting “trickle down” makes the team better at all the skill positions.

Yeah, well how many playoff wins did we get with that Dome Patrol defense? It was criminal to have never gotten them a win in the playoffs!!!!!

Yep, but when you have Bobby Hebert throwing 3 INTs against the Eagles in the 2nd half & blowing a 20-7 lead...in the 1992 NFC Wild Card Game

He took a sack for a safety & he threw a pick 6... HORRIBLE!!!

Bobby Herbert was no where near a hall of fame QB!!!

Carl Smith OC... Horrible when games were on the line...
It doesn't matter how great of a D you have when you have a QB that plays this poorly in big games and you have a horrible OC!

You need both. Fine hire your defensive head coach. Who are all the great OCs out there looking for OC work right now? I can name a bunch of DCs. Because they are generally fired as HCs. But that means I can pair Ben Johnson with someone like Robert Saleh. You hire Aaron Glenn. Who is your OC?

Yep, balance is needed. Which is why there's no predetermined path to success, let alone one that demands an offensive HC.

Throwing out names doesn't provide any form of empirical proof, that's just relying on anecdote.

The truth is no one knows which OC or DC is going to make a winning HC...
Vrabel was the only candidate that has winning HC experience.

My only hope is that we hit another home run like we did with Payton!
& we switch to the 3-4...

Thats not really the league anymore. Its high 3k's to low 4k passing yards and running the football. Running games are back, probably more of a side effect of not having prime Brees, Brady, Rodgers, Rivers, Eli, Payton in the league anymore.
