Doug Nussmeier is Offensive Coordinator , Saints officially finalized hire per Underhill (21 Viewers)

I’m talking about building a team with division title in the worst division in the league as a ceiling as opposed to it being a natural consequence of competing for a championship. Fixing a couple of things so we can win 10 games and the NFCS as the ceiling, when 6 of those wins come from other mediocre teams in the south, does nothing for me. That is what we’re talking about here. We’re not talking about 15-2 Lions division winners because most people thought they were Super Bowl bound. Nobody thought the Bucs were, not even Bucs fans after winning the division 3 years straight.

I want them building a team that people are talking about as contenders in week one. Not a team that’s estimated to win 9 games.
Do you really think that ANYONE in the Saints organization is saying " let's build a team that will just win the division " Or that that's the ultimate goal?
This talk of ceilings and floors is so off base. Every yr a team exceeds what everyone thought their ceiling was going to be . And every yr a team falls below the floor that everyone thought it would be

The Vikings were smart to take on Darnold for what they got him for last year because he was a good fit and was cheap. That is the kind of contract we should have given Carr after he was cut from the Raiders. The next team to sign Darnold will get stuck holding the bag out of desperation to find a QB. I don’t think he’s Baker, he’s still Darnold who happened to fit on a fairly stacked team. What happened to Cousins when he left should be a cautionary tale.
Carr was a much more proven QB than Darnold or Mayfield ever were before they signed. DC would have never signed for that nor should he should have.

Maybe, but we really don't know and both were only for one year. As I have said, I think Staley likely gets the job because of his experience and specifically play calling experience. He's also the safe pick, but I can't help but hope for a younger coach with more upside. I think Staley is a solid DC, and I like the scheme, but I don't think he's a great DC.

The fact that it is taking this long makes me think it's at least possible that they take the risk on a younger guy.
Why is it you seem to always want the unproven guy and think there is more upside than a guy that has had success at the position? Staley is a great defensive mind. Parker has never called a D play before. Staley took the Rams D from 17 to #1 in 1 yr. And all this talk about how they had great players , the only great player they had was Darnold, and he was there the yr before. They had Darnold , Ramsey and Floyd and that;s really it

You do realize keeping Carr causes more cap problems down the line. The Saints will have to restructure his 30 million salary this year pushing that down the line on top of last years restructure. It also includes another 10 million dollar roster bonus. So with the 61 million cap hit and restructure and he will have close to 75 million cap hit next year. https://www.spotrac.com/nfl/player/_/id/14445/derek-carr
And by not restructuring DC's contract you will have to redo almost everyone on the roster including the aging vets like Mathieu, DD, Cam, Hill making us keep them to even more past their prime. Also we would have no $ to sign our own FAs like Adebo , JJ, Harris.

I've already outlined in another thread how it's possible to move on from Carr, have cap money available in June and be clear of ALL of the bad contracts by next spring. The restructures aren't that severe when taking into account many of the largest ones are for good players that are under contract for several years. The mid-sized ones are for the older vets and get taken care of next year by the savings gained from Carr not being on the roster. It is not as hard as it appears on paper, but you have to be ok with the team not making any significant moves between March and June. I and many others are willing to accept that in order for things to be cleaned up for the future. Others are not.
And part of that issue is all of the decent FAs will be signed elsewhere , including our own. Plus we won't be able to sign even our rookie class in till a month after the draft making them unable to attend rookie mini camp. So that 30. mil we get post 6/1 will be of little value except maybe for next yr

You should watch Underhill's Nickcast from today. He thinks that restructuring Carr's contract this yr and not touching Mathieu, DD, and Hill is the better way to go. It gives us like 31 mi under the cap this yr

I like the way you said this, and I can support that perspective.

I'm with Elvis in that I get frustrated with talk of winning the NFCS, as it almost always sounds like that is the objective to be achieved. It's not. It's simply a means to an end. The goal IS...and always has been, Lombardi! Division champs just means you earned a shot to achieve your objective. I hear the argument that 31 teams fail to achieve their objective every season. This is true, but it doesn't mean your season wasn't successful?! I don't see the measure of success as an "all or nothing" metric. The Lombardi....yes, that's all or nothing....your 1st place or your place doesn't matter. But when it comes to a successful season, I think there's a spectrum there.

And speaking for me personally....winning the NFCS is nice, but it's a means to an end....it isn't the end itself. In football terms, we have a 17-game preseason to see who is qualified to play for the crown. Make no mistake....the goal isn't simply to qualify....it's the crown! Maybe splitting hairs here, but i think it's a very important distinction. JMO...
Nobody and I mean NOBODY not the Saints not the fans have ever said our ONLY goal is to win the NFCS. It's ALWAYS the FIRST goal. Because it's the 1st hurdle. Just like saying "The ceiling for this team is" Did anyone say the ceiling for Wash was the NFCCG this yr?? Or for the Vikings to go 14-3?

It’s even more convoluted. But good point The TE is the son of the LB coach who became head coach.

Nepo baby central, but i dont really mind.. whole League is kinda that way.. plus, it seems to be the family business with a lot of these guys.. if someone owns a tow truck company and passes it on to their kid to run, that kid’s a nepo baby too.. just facts .

Hell, we used to have a literal Lombardi on our staff not that long ago .

And so he shouldn’t have been solely based on the face his last name was Lombardi. … I’m admittedly an older Who Dat. But I’m good with Dat. Bias based on last name? C’Mon man … what else you got if you really “don’t mind?” … the longer football exists, the more likely knowledge runs off to the next generations. It is what it is even if you refuse to get it.

Is English not ur first language ? You mind translating whatever you were trying to say ?

With the new announcement of Nuss as OC, you have a real shot at winning. Any other OC I would put big odds against you. But now with Garret Nuss in the 2026 draft and Doug Nuss as OC, its very possible we cut Carr, eat as much cap as possible and roll with Rattler for a year or two.

In fact, if they really do want to draft his son next year, it makes zero sense to roll with Carr for this coming season from a contractual sense and draft pick position sense.
