Draft Prospect Kyle Hamilton, Safety, Norte Dame; Slipping in draft, really? How far will he fall, if any? Trade up for Safety? (1 Viewer)

OK I had to do this. I realize this will not be popular with all of our offensive holes. But hey we need something to talk about right. So Kyle Hamilton, one of the highest rated players in this years draft, who plays Safety (Norte Dame), had a slow 40 time at his pro day yesterday and as you might expect, the sports media needs to make some news. Headlines saying Hamilton is slipping down the draft boards. So I ask you, where will he get picked? Could our defensive minded head coach possibly be campaigning to move up and grab him? Any chance he falls all the way back to 18? If this would happen, then do we have to grab him? So far we’ve lost thee Safety’s from last years team and gained back one via free agency (M. Maye/not counting D. Sorensen). Several top ten picks are now being solicited for trade. Saints have always been aggressive and don’t hesitate to move up. Any Saints news here to talk about or not?

IF, he falls out the top 10. I say try to move up and get him. Jenkins just retired, the big thing we have to replace is his ability to cover these freak TEs we face. Hamilton would be that guy.
I don't think we need to replace TA in this draft, his replacement is already under contract. That only leaves WR as a need.

I am not fond of trying to catch a falling knife. Especially a safety w/ a slow 40 time. There much safer picks at FS in the 2nd and 3rd round.

He's a top 5 player in this draft. There are no safer picks at safety than this young man. High floor, high ceiling. He can literally do everything exceptionally well at both safety position. Forget the 40 time. If he's there it's not even a question. He won't be there though, I still think he's going top 10 at worst, likely even still top 5. He's a generational talent at the safety position.

Safety in the whole scheme of things is a low value position. Compare the pay of top safeties vs other defensive positions and especially compare it to offensive stars. A safety is the equivalent of a RB almost why draft in the first round.

I know the OP is throwing ideas. But a safety sliding is not too surprising. Picking one high in the first carries a big contract in relation to importance on team.

Better to use those kind of picks on O LINE QB CB WR LB and Edge Rusher. Where you get max prodution on a cheap contract in a position scarce with talent

I agree with most of this except the big contract part. NFL’s a big time passing league now and you have to have a great ‘safety net’ on the back end. If you can plug in a rookie for the next 5 years like we did with M. Williams, and compare what you would be paying Hamilton vs the current top Safety salaries, not really a high overall cost to fill a vital position.

Not sure what contract is now for top 5 pick. I think ita 32mill fully garaunteed for 4 years. A second rd pick converesely makes peanuts compared to that.

MW is close to top market salary at 13 mill. I believe.

I looked up MW contract its a lot of fake money. It is only 35 million garaunteed. He gets paid around 11mill total the First 2 years. 18 mill on the Third year. Close to 40 the final two years. He probably will not see those final two years.

Stop with the distractions, the moves to make are for a top WR, TE, and OL. I can see if we address those positions before the draft but right now we have needs.

Oh I was not thinking a top 5 pick! Remember, we’re talking about him falling back. If your picking him in the top five, that’s really not even a fall for a Safety. My thinking is more like to the ten or later spot. No way do you jump into the top five with our offensive needs.
