Drew Brees is MVP.... Refute it. (1 Viewer)

Yup. I'm sure if it was up to any of us here at SaintsReport, any of us. We would give Drew the league MVP award. I want him to win it, and I would cast my vote for him.

but it's not up to us. It's up to a panel and here's the panel.
AP Voters

Guys like Phil Simms, Boomer Boomer Esiason , Rodney Harrison, Rich Gannon, Tony Romo, Bill Cowher, Bruce Arians, Tony Romo, Trent Green, Troy Aikman; have all publicly been on the record at some point this season and said they would give their MVP vote to Mahomes. These are all guys either have voting rights for this award, or are highly connected with individuals who have a vote.

Those guys vote on this, we do not... and we already know they support Mahomes for this award. Unless their view drastically changes in these next couple of weeks their minds are already made up.

Makes it much easier to not take it seriously anymore, then. They will inevitably prove that whoever they want to win the award, they'll spin the narrative to make it make sense. When we darn well know that Drew will now be the textbook case for why the MVP votes are inconsistent, and therefore don't matter.

Agreed. Classic case of the media moving the goalposts.

It's simple. If the MVP selection committee goes by the criteria they've generally used in the past, then Brees should be the consensus choice. If they go with Mahomes, it will be proof positive that the award is subjective and that the criteria changes from year to year.

Obviously, I think Drew deserves the MVP, but I won't lose any sleep over it if he doesn't. If anything, yet another MVP snub would just add more fuel to his fire.

Works for me either way.

Brees is one of the worst starting QB's right now. I think MVP is out the window. He can make up for it with a big postseason.

I have a bit of time on my hands while I have to wait to cook with the wife for Christmas eve, so I pulled up the MVP list since 1999.

Kurt Warner is the last QB to win league MVP and go on to win the SB. Since then, the list has looked like this -

2000 - Marshall Fault - Rams lose wildcard game
2001 - Kurt Warner - Rams lose Super Bowl
2002 - Rich Gannon - Raiders lose Super Bowl

2003 - Steve McNair/Peyton Manning - Titans and Colts lose in playoffs
2004 - Peyton Manning - Colts lose in divisional round
2005 - Shaun Alexander - Seahawks lose Super Bowl in the most controversial SB ever with bad officiating
2006 - LD Tomlinson - Chargers lose in divisional round
2007 - Tom Brady - Patriots lose Super Bowl
2008 - Peyton Manning - Colts lose in divisional round
2009 - Peyton Manning - Colts lose Super Bowl
2010 - Tom Brady - Patriots lose in divisional round
2011 - Aaron Rodgers - Packers lose in divisional round
2012 - Adrian Peterson - Vikings lose wildcard game
2013 - Peyton Manning - Broncos lose Super Bowl
2014 - Aaron Rodgers - Packers choke away conference title game
2015 - Cam Newton - Panthers lose Super Bowl
2016 - Matt Ryan - Falcons lose Super Bowl
2017 - Tom Brady - Patriots lose Super Bowl

Notice a trend here? It's almost been 20 years since the league MVP went on to win the Super Bowl. Rodgers is the only quarterback in recent years to not even reach the Super Bowl in an MVP season and I'm 100% sure the Packers would've lost to the Patriots too in 2014. That Packers team had no business getting past Dallas if not for the Dez Bryant call and then like perfect karma, they choked away the NFC title game. The Pats would've beat them in that Super Bowl, no doubt.

Getting MVP ended up being the kiss of death to Newton, Ryan and Brady the last three years in a row. The only one who played exceptionally well in their SB loss was Brady, and yet it was his fumble that became the deciding play in that game. They all received the kiss of death before the big game.

If Brees gets MVP and we follow that award up with a SB loss, I don't ever want to hear anyone complain about Peyton Manning having too many MVPs or Ryan and Newton having an MVP ever again. Then it will all be even.

No one is going to care or remember MVPs 20 years from now. Did anyone here remember Shaun Alexander winning his in 2005 or Rich Gannon having one? All we remember is that Oakland got demolished in that SB and the Seahawks were victims to some of the worst officiating ever in their SB loss to Pittsburgh (A true testament to the ring argument being ridiculous - Big Ben gets credit for having 2 rings when he played like absolute crap in that SB).

Just give it to Mahomes and spare us this MVP curse. I want another ring more than anything. Mahomes will be the face of the league two years from now when Brees and Brady are retired. The only thing stopping Mahomes is going to be his coach's bad clock management in the playoffs and the Chiefs horrible defense.

You've been beating your anti-MVP position an awful lot lately. We get it. Records are broken all the time. If Brees wins MVP, it won't make a lick of difference in the race for the SB. Just because it hasn't happened in years doesn't mean anything. Just because you've rolled a 6 10 times doesn't change the odds of rolling a six on the next roll.

I get that people are superstitious, but to each his own. I'm not, and I'm pulling for Brees to get both an MVP and a ring.

No team that lost their last three headed into the playoffs ever won the Super Bowl...

No team that lost to Tampa during the regular season ever won the Super Bowl...

Teams that go into the Super Bowl with a defense that allows more points than the opposing defense usually lose the Super Bowl...

Past performance does not guarantee future results.
