N/S Eagles extend RB Saquan Barkley with a massive 2-year $41.2 million contract (27 Viewers)

It’s one thing to mirror what Loomis is doing, it’s another thing to do what Loomis is doing and having success.

Loomis isn’t having success doing what he’s doing. The Eagles are.
Yeah that's the thing. The All In strategy is incredibly bright and shrewd when you have a contender type toster. I was a major advocate for the strategy when we had Brees/SP.

Of course you focus on winning now when you have a first ballot HoF QB and the best HC in franchise history. But they both left. The roster got old. A lot of talent left. To me the strategy makes perfect sense until it starts making no sense whatsoever.

I agree somewhat...it's only a 2 year commitment though and clearly their window should be sustainably open for at least a couple of years.
It's an extension to the 3 year deal he signed last year so he's locked in for the next 4 years. I'm not sure how it's been done yet but he had signed a 3 year, $37 million contract and this is 2 year, $41 million. It'll average out to like $16 million a year, something extremely reasonable that every team in the league would pay. Some receivers cost twice as much and don't produce nearly as much.

Great move by the Eagles to reward him for having such a great year. That's the kind of move that makes FA's want to come play for you.

It's not a new thing. A good running game had always been critical to a championship teams. Also, there's is not a lack of talent at QB. The AFC is loaded and NFC is playing catchup with Jayden and Jalen.

New? No. But there was a period from around 2011 - 2017 where we saw a record low of RB's selected in the first round and even the second round compared to most time periods. The league was also pass heavy compared to any other time period of the NFL and operated primarily off timing-based passing offenses. As far as QB's go, the top 5 QB's now couldn't hold a candlestick to the top 5 QB's in 2014. Even Mahomes, Burrow and Allen are nothing compared to the likes of Brees, Manning, Brady, Rodgers and maybe even Rivers for years proceeding and after 2014. Maybe they could rival Roethlisberger, Luck and Flacco for 6-10. But there was a massive gap between the top 4 and everyone else, back when RB's weren't a premium for a time.

This is the kind of RB contract that seems to often result in a Week-Two ACL Injury.

I would say the eagles are now in our 2017-2020 time frame when we were winning and had a superbowl taken from us. We are dealing with the aftermath of those years compounded by a Covid year where the cap went down.

The question is how are the eagles going to look in 2027 when a 30 year old Barkley has a 21.4 mil cap number on a void year? Do they extend him into his 30’s and cause bigger problems? Or eat that big cap number for a player who isn’t on their team? How many more players do they have to do that for over the next couple years? That’s the question. 2027 isn’t looking good for them. 200+ mil in cap liabilities with 20 players under contract.

Yes, the teams have become more pass-heavy, but a healthy mix of run and pass has always been the ideal.

Outside of Brady (a lot of folks thought Montana was the goat prior to Brady), its perspective and the top QBs are still under 30 (who knows what records Mahomes will have when he finishes). Mahomes, Lamar (who you forgot and is putting up ridiculous stats), Allen, and Burrow are pretty good and that's not considering what Jayden turn into.

No offense, but I think you're learning the wrong lesson. From 2011 to 2017, let's look at the RB draft classes. It wasn't that RBs weren't a premium. There weren't any premium RBs. No one coming out the drafts during the time period you quoted were on the level of Tomlinson, Peterson, Lynch before them or McCaffery, Kamara, Barkley after them.

From that time period, none of the RBs drafted are really threatening the record books as an all-time great. Yes, there's been a few good RBs in that time period but no one I would call generational just good. There were several years where the RB classes just weren't really good. If there was 1 or 2 good players, the classes definitely weren't deep. So of course, the value for RBs were down. Worthy RBs just weren't there. It wasn't until 2017 that there was a really decent RB class.

And this points back to the issue with drafting need aka drafting position ask BPA at a position of need or whatever you're calling it to rationalize drafting on anything besides the actual players in the draft. If you "needed" a RB in 2014 and just had your heart set on taking one, you probably ended up with a lemon. But if you were smart and realized the RB class was terrible and pivoted to taking BPA, you likely got a player that contributed more to your team than the RB you avoided who ended out the league after a few years.

Teams weren't just undervaluing RBs. Think about that time period, the RBs just weren't as good. The Giants GM also totally learned the wrong lesson. It wasn't that the value for RBs had dropped so much as the RBs deserving the value had fallen. Barkley is special and the Giants totally missed that thinking no one would offer him as much as they would. They were incredibly wrong. And the Eagles know what they have. The Niners know what they have. The Saints know what they have.

Fast forward to this year's draft. Jeanty is going early barring some horrific bombshell about him drops. Teams aren't going to avoid drafting him because they don't value RBs anymore. He's worthy so he'll go early. It's as simple as that. Unless you're a kicker or punter, great players are getting undervalued in the draft. If your tape looks insane and you kill it at the combine/pro-day, you're not going to be sitting around until day 2 or later because your position isn't in style at the moment. If anything, certain positions get overvalued in the NFL draft: QB, Tackles, and DEs. Teams drafting positions over players make that mistake every year. With this new regime, I'm hoping it's not the Saints.

It always bothered me that the RB position got devalued. All RBs are not the same. Sure a RB by committee is cool, but some of these RBs should get the bulk of the volume bc they produce. Especially when given the rock enough for them to get into a groove/zone. I don’t want to hear the crap about the shelf life of an NFL RB. Those dudes know exactly what they sign up for and I’m sure they would be cool with being “the guy”, while maximizing their money in their short window.

Zeke, Henry, or Todd Gurley wasn’t considered premium talent?

Many posters believe they’re smarter than the people making the decisions
Dunning-Kruger effect on full display!

As George Carlin observed, think about how stupid the AVERAGE person is; then recognize that 50% are even "stupider than that". But 100% are convinced they are "above average". Dunning-Kruger...

Where were they drafted? They were each the best RB in their classes. Elliot was a top pick 5. Gurley a top 10 pick. But the classes in general were underwhelming. This furthers my point. The position wasn't devalued, the players over all just weren't that good. Elliot and Gurley went high because they were seen as being good in spite of being RBs. Good RBs weren't devalued. The rest of there classes were players who were not as good, so they weren't drafted as high. It wasn't because the NFL decided RBs weren't important anymore. It was the RBs were not as good anymore.

Henry had huge weight concerns coming out of college as people didn't think he could be as good on the next level because of his size.

The key to making it work is drafting well. They value draft picks and have drafted very well. They've averaged 8 picks a year in the last 5 years. And have drafted high impact players in every draft in this time frame.

This all day.....we simply need to find a way to draft better than we have the last few years, that in combination with finding players that can stay healthy....and perhaps improvement in the support (medical, strength) staff as well.....

You can draft well all day long, but if the coach thinks..

Player A was a one year wonder at DE and the guy you spent 2 firsts on is the future, then drafts yet another DE in the first round or,

Player B is considered a special teams ace not an every down LBer or,

Player C is a malcontent for wanting to be paid as CB and not a safety...when you're playing him CB although he's a safety.

Then drafting we'll wasnt going to help poor Player evaluation by the head coach.
