But I am all about is going after gonzo like there is no tomorrow, I think payton has been very dissapointed with our TE cast when he got here and its apparent it would be a huge part of our pffanse if we had one and of course you know Drew would be all about having a big amazing tight end to throw to again along with his new found sure handed receivers!

I would love to have gonzo, but I hope he isn't our 1 big free agent pickup. Although TE has been a weakness for us, it's obvious offense isn't the problem with this team. We need serious help at CB and LB...another DT wouldn't hurt either. I'd much rather sign a player like Daniel Graham or draft a TE in the 2nd or 3rd round and get more help at DB and LB. If we go into next season with this defense, we can expect the same results, no matter who we have at TE.

We need a guy in the secondary that has a nack for the ball. Someone that the QB would be afraid to throw near. Someone that can hit like a LB but run with the WR's.

A safety? We already have Roman Harper. I think we are set with our starters at Safety, but we could use some depth and CB is obviously a huge need.

We are in a position now to do what good teams do and that is building thru the draft. I say we get one big FA and then draft best player available. We can also fill holes by acquiring mid-level FA for depth and role players. If I were to pick up one major FA out of Briggs, Thomas, Samuel and Clements; it would have to be Briggs. Briggs is exactly the type of player we need and would give us more bang for the buck. Then we can draft one of those athletic CBs in the draft.

But if we were to go CB in FA it would have to be Samuel. Samuel has alot more upside than Clements. He's progressed alot faster and produces alot more. But as I stated before, we'd be better off with Briggs. CB is a deep position this year in the draft and we are going to be picking in the mid to late range.

I totally agree with you on Briggs. One big FA is realistic and Briggs would be a great fit. I disagree with you on Samuel. Clements is bigger, faster and he gets more interceptions. If Briggs would be our one big FA then Samuel would be a good pickup since he won't command the kind of money Clements will. I like Samuel, but how good will he be when he isn't in the Patriots system?

Gonzalez would be nice, but there is no way he should be our top FA especially with our weaknesses on defense. I'm not sure how much money he would command on the market, but if he could he had for a decent price I would love to get Graham at TE. Adalius Thomas would be a nice, but how much money do you give to someone who is already 29? Kris Dielman would also be a nice FA, but what kind of money would he command? Roderick Hood would be a great addition at CB and he shouldn't command too much money.

I would take a risk with Daniel Graham(TE). They say he has suffered some injuries But so has our TE's. The plus is he is young and when healthy he is very good.

No doubt, and having Drew in N.O. could help attract Watson here

The players I think we should give offers to:

Cato June - good LB, we still need help here, but I wouldn't break the bank on him. I didn't put Lance Briggs because hes probably going to be wanting WAY to much money.

Robaire Smith - if we don't resign Hollis Thomas, he could be a good replacement. if nothing more, he could be a very good rotating lineman.

Eric Steinbach - we still need help on the offensive line, and I still think our biggest weakness is the inside of the line.

Players we should break the bank for, people we need to offer more than what they are asking just to get them here:

Daniel Graham - everybody is looking for a great receiving and blocking TE. Graham does both very well, we should give him whatever hes asking and maybe a little more.

Ken Hamlin - If Seattle lets this guy go, we should really push hard to get him. One of the more underrated safties in the league. Delivers HARD hits, makes offensive players pay if they come in his area.

Exactly. Even if a good player would hit the open market there would be a lot of teams trying to get him and his demands would be earthshaking.

Never too soon to think FA for the following year!

Does anyone think that Shanle will be worth keeping? Clark on the goal line is worth keeping too. Letting Grant go would hurt, big time. You can't just look at his numbers because he makes 2 blockers account for him. That will change if he goes. Hollis Thomas needs to be here for 2 more years.

That being said, we can make a stud DT a draft priority and have him play in a back-up role next year and start in 2 years.

Assuming we keep MM and let Freddie and Craft go, we will need a stud FA CB. Clements will be tough to get. The competition will be huge to get his services, but he may like our situation (being a good team, with good coaches and playing indoors and a very good #2 cb), so if the offers are even, why wouldn't he consider us? Asante would be a great addition if we can't land Clements. Add a stud CB with our first or second round pick that we could use in our nickel packages, and we will be golden.

Adalius Thomas is Payton's kind of player. He is so good and so versatile. I bet you that if he doesn't sign with the Ravens, Payton and Loomis will make a run at him. We could make another run at Claiborne this year. Claiborne would be an upgrade at MLB. Briggs will be back in Chicago. They won't let him go. In fact, keeping Briggs might be the biggest factor in freeing up one or more of their CB's for free agency.

There are some quality players out there in '07 and I have faith that Loomis and Payton will do what it takes to sure up the CB, LB and DT positions next year. The keys will be getting H. Thomas, C. Grant back in black and gold and letting F. Thomas and Jason Craft move on. Those 2 guys will account for nearly $5 mill next year! That will be about what Clements asks for. We will probably ask Joe Horn to restructure a bit as well as B. Young. They are going to account for nearly $8 mill. next year. That will help too.

well, i was browsing through the FA crop yesterday for a hour or 2 and this is some players we should go after as starters and for depth......


QB-
Tim Rattay (TB): thats if the saints want a #3 QB, and our QB coach is familar with him from college days at LA-tech and also Martin isnt getting any younger.

WR-
Pat Crayton (DAL)- payton knows him but he would provide depth and such.
Dennis Northcutt (CLE)- this guy is a threat on catching, running and returning punts.
Travis Taylor (MIN)- he would provide great depth.
Kelley Washington (CIN)- a explosive young WR.

TE-
Tony Gonzo (KC)- thats if the chiefs let him walk...would solve our TE problems.
Daniel Graham (NE)- underrated and can catch and block well.
Eric Johnson (SF)- great receving TE but is injury prone.
David Martin (GB)- is basically GB's starting TE and is underrated.
Reggie Kelly (CIN)- starter for them...isnt a star but is good enough to be a starter.

OT- theirs other known stars but these guys are depth since were set at OT.
Jordan Black (KC)- started at LT for them last year and isnt bad.
Tra' Thomas (PHI)- starting LT for the eagles and is on downside of his career though.
Jermey Bridges (CAR)- has started some games for the cats' this year.

OG- another position that needs depth and maybe a starter at LG.
Eric Steinbach (CIN)- starter for them and is pretty good.
David Diehl (NYG)- starter for them.
Kris Dielman (SD)- starter for them also and brees knows him well.
Sean Mahan (TB)- would provide great depth for us and can play multiple spots.
Leander Jordan (SD)- good back-up and bress knows him too.
Jason Whittle (MIN)- payton knows him from their time in NY where he was a backup.

DT- their isnt much guys here we can sign, i think the draft is the route to go for.
Robaire Smith (TEN)- was a starter but peforms well when he is playing.
Terdell Sands (OAK)- is a BIG guy who gives a 100% all time and is a run plugger.
Cullen Jenkins (GB)- guy is under-rated and gives all he gots and is stout for the run and rush too.
Ian Scott (CHI)- is the guy who doesnt put up stats but takes up blockers for others to make plays.

CB- i hope we can get a starter here....
Nate Clements (BUF)- guy is a #1 corner and the saints should break the bank for him.
Asante Samuel (NE)- starter and is under-rated and can play the ball and cover well.
Nick Harper (IND)- is a starter for them and is under-rated.
Travis Fisher (STL)- he is a young player and is pretty good but has had the injury bug.
David Macklin (ARI)- was a starter and is pretty realible
Roderick Hood (PHI)- is their nickle and has played pretty well.
Torrie Cox (TB)- strictly depth and has been a starter for the bucs this year though.

OLB- i think were set here...unless payton wants to upgrade the WLB.
Adaulis Thomas (BAL)- guy plays all over the place and just makes plays.
Lance Briggs (CHI)- guy is a playmaker and is all over the place for da' bears.
Cato June (IND)- had a pro-bowl year in 05' and is the colts best LB'er.
Boss Bailey (DET)- has had the injury bug but is good enough to be a starter.
Al Singleton (DAL)- is on downside of his career but goodback-up and payton knows him.
Brandon Short (NYG)- payton knows this guy from giant days. and is a good defender/backup.
Warrick Holdman (WSH)- good starter and good backup.

MLB- this is the position we need to upgrade.
Donnie Edwards (SD)- we know his story.
Kawika Mitchell (KC)- is a starter in the middle and is all over the place.
EJ Henderson (MIN)- can play the inside or outside and is a OK starter.
Peter Sirmon (TEN)- starter for them in the middle and plays well.


S- we need depth here not a starter...
Kevin Kaeshivarn (CIN)- is a part-time starter and good backup, can create TO's.
Tyrone Carter (PIT)- guy is a hard-hitter and has a knack for creating TO's.
Terrence Holt (DET)- was a part-time starter for the lions in 05'.

Do you think Charles Grant will leave? I agree we won't over-pay him. If so we will need another DE, maybe a vet here, since Nincovich will be recovering from surgery and Whitehead is not an every-down player.
