ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler: Saints Head Coach opening is a coveted job among people I’ve spoken to; Mike McCarthy could have interest (32 Viewers)

Because people overestimate certain aspects of a job (salary cap and current roster) and underestimate other aspects like job security, how tough the division is, and a team's general culture.

The Saints have a strong FO culture regardless of Loomis' recent fumbles that coaches can trust won't screw them over. We also play in the weakest division in the NFC (maybe football?). If a head coach comes in knowing he's got at least fours years (something we are likely to offer), he can take his lumps the first season with the cap and roster and be set up in year two to do big things.

Anyone going to the Jets/Raiders/Jags could be getting fired two years from now, and prospects know it. Even the Bears is a questionable job. That division is brutal and Caleb Williams is a complete weirdo.

NE is head and shoulders above all the other open jobs.
The thing about the Raiders is that all the comments see the Raiders as the John Madden/Tom Flores Raiders.
When in reality, they’ve been probably one of the five most dysfunctional franchises in sports for the last quarter century.

So coveted that we are one of the only teams with an opening to not get an interview with the top name.

I'd have a higher opinion of Ben Johnson's evaluation of franchises had he not accepted an interview with the Raiders. That is a coaching graveyard that regularly fires coaches and has a terrible owner.

My view of these opening is that New England is clearly the best job and the Raiders are the worst. The other 4 teams are in the middle and the order depends on what a specific coach is looking for. For instance, if a HC loves Caleb Williams they are #2, but if you don't like him they are #5 because you would be stuck with him for at least 3 more years. Same with the Jags and lawrence except Lawrence is more expensive.

I remember when Mike McDaniel was becoming a hot name in the head coaching sphere, it was said that he would not coach for a team located in a state without legalized recreational cannabis. He then got hired by the Dolphins. Point being that there could be any number of reasons why Ben Johnson decided this wasn’t a destination he would like. And as far as I have heard, the Saints FO didn’t even request to interview him, so speculating on it is pretty pointless.

Perhaps coveted in the sense that the owner isn't named Jones or Johnson. Gayle doesn't have the reputation of being meddlesome. Reason why it was an eye-opener when she went around Loomis to fire DA.

I think two things are universally true -- all NFL jobs are coveted, as there's only 32 of them, and as the old country song title goes, no one knows what goes on behind closed doors.

I think it's pretty clear that the saints are in the lower tier of the availabilities. I understand we have a stable FO and we are going to give more of a leash, but it's risky to come here and lose for 2 years and then possibly get fired. Salary cap, lack of talent, especially young talent, makes this a tough sell. That being said, there are only 32 of these jobs, so any vacancy is "coveted." I do with Raiders had not fired their coach. The less openings the better.
Despite the reasons that we as fans want to believe why the Saints job shouldn’t be appealing, Fowler apparently has information that the Saints job is actually desirable from an organizational standpoint based on who he’s spoken to. That can be from candidates’ agents or other teams executives.

Salary cap doesn’t hinder the FO and next coach from improving the team like it never has. Saints’ roster has always been primarily built and improved through draft selections. Next coach likely understands how the Saints cap got into its predicament mostly from extending so many of the Saints’ star draft picks from the 2016-2017 classes to their market values, along with the defense’s best player for a while now. And that it’ll be a 2 year fix to clear off larger contracts. Next coach will have the opportunity to develop the team how he sees fit despite the cap.

Interesting. He's saying the Saints job is coveted? That would be opposite of what most have speculated.
Well if others have speculated and he has spoken then I would lean towards the latter

As odd as it sounds our cap issues are from the FO signing players

Could be the Saints have a respected owner who will spend money

All NFL head coaching jobs are "coveted" as there are so few (and even fewer openings this year). It is a matter of how coveted compared to the other openings.

Fowler: This is a coveted job among people I've spoken to recently. I've heard that Cowboys coach Mike McCarthy could have some interest, so it wouldn't shock if the Saints try to talk to him should he be free to do so (McCarthy's contract with the Cowboys expires Tuesday).

All or parts of this were possibly planted (recently) by:

A: Mike McCarthy
B: Mickey Loomis

I'm losing interest in who the coach will be because Magic Mickey will do what he do. The appeal of the job is that if you win here, you are a forever God, fused to the soul of the peoplehood. Culture fit matters most to me. I'd like Brady or a new person with offensive chops who embraces the city and the culture. Sean was 1000% football coach and strategist, but he had a relatable personality warmth to him with the fans. Sean liked to have fun and carved space for that alongside the seriousness of his football drive. Dennis did not have that element of his personality, ever.

Give us a culture fit coach who can develop talent, stabilize and grow the offense, and restock the defense on all three levels. It's gonna take a hard nosed, but fun coach (like Sean and Dan are) to do that.

I think part of the appeal is the expectations should be lower for the first couple of seasons compared to some of the other openings that will come with more pressure out of the gates.

i’m not sure there’s a “big namer” out there. I wouldn’t say johnson is a big namer. no HC experience on a stacked team. best offense i’ve seen in years. i can call plays there lol
