ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler: Saints Head Coach opening is a coveted job among people I’ve spoken to; Mike McCarthy could have interest (1 Viewer)

Lack of talent, lack of youth, lack of cap money. Oh and we're tied to aging players that are on their way out and a mediocre QB (well, at least we're tied to either the aging players or the mediocre qb)
sure the obvious reasons but the new coach knows we don’t make stupid drastic changes immediately. whoever comes in will be here a while to build the team they want. no 1 and dones here.

New England has 131,000,000 in cap space. And they have Drake Maye. Very attractive for a coach.

Cap space isn’t really meant to spend on anyone just because its there though. Patriots have that much cap space available because they aren’t drafting top market-value stars to re-sign. They also weren’t re-signing significant players under Belichick. Saints extended 6 star draft picks who were selected in 2015-2019. Drafted about 4 more since then.

Before Gonzalez and Maye in the last 2 drafts, I think Chandler Jones is the last major star talent the Patriots drafted and that was in 2012.

one year of cap purging . mayne 2 and

the team is ready to go with a couple good drafts in a horrible division

Jets, Raiders, Jags are organizational messes. I think Caleb’s ceiling is Russell Wilson but the Bears are a good option. Pats are the gem of jobs.

Loomis will go to bat for his HC and give them full control. His reticence to fire DA, willingness to turnover assistant coaching staff, and signing of Carr shows those things. Saints are a mid-tier option this year.
LOL but don't you know ML is a power-mad dictator that tells the HC we must trade up and draft a Davenport or Turner. And it was Loomis that told DA we need to make this deal with the Eagles so we can get a WR and a OT in this draft. Don't you know that??? ( Sarcasm Off)

Coveted by people with a small demand. It's still 1 of 32.

Also, there are some good pieces here, and some potentially good pieces. Sure there are some massive black holes (what’s a WR?) but there are enough pieces that with some coaching up, a good start, all that and hitting in the draft we can’t easily get to .500

I'd have a higher opinion of Ben Johnson's evaluation of franchises had he not accepted an interview with the Raiders. That is a coaching graveyard that regularly fires coaches and has a terrible owner.

My view of these opening is that New England is clearly the best job and the Raiders are the worst. The other 4 teams are in the middle and the order depends on what a specific coach is looking for. For instance, if a HC loves Caleb Williams they are #2, but if you don't like him they are #5 because you would be stuck with him for at least 3 more years. Same with the Jags and lawrence except Lawrence is more expensive.
Why do you think NE is the best opening? Yeah they have Maye but he's been kind of ehh. They just fired Mayo after ONE yr. Yes they have cap space but they also have 17 of their own FAs. If you think we need talent at every position NE is worse that we are

I still put the Bears maybe 1st . Eberflus completely botched the handling of Williams. Waldron while he's a good OC was not the guy for Williams.
They are almost set at the skill positions they OL help. Their D is in the middle. They have plenty of cap space

That is interesting. I never agreed with the narrative that this was clearly the worst of the available jobs, but I didn't expect anyone to say it was a coveted job. I hope Fowler is right.
I've never thought it was the worst, but probably the hardest to have near term success with. I think the stability here gives us a bump over Jax and Las Vegas, but think the others are more attractive. due to talent on the roster and cap space to use immediately.

I think Loomis’ attitude and decision making have both reached a level that makes his position untenable and “coveted” feels like a big exaggeration but two things that a coach coming here doesn’t have to worry about: salary and job security. Whoever we hire is going to get 3 seasons, unless they completely lose the locker room.

In the case that this job is coveted, Gayle Benson should get her checkbook out and offer Mike Vrabel a long term contract that makes him the highest paid coach in the NFL. He did a very good job in Tennessee and if we can somehow find a franchise QB we’ll be perennial Super Bowl contenders with him. His CV is the most impressive by a long way (obviously helps that he’s been a HC before).

Failing that, Aaron Glenn is probably the best bet out of the remaining known interviewees. I wasn’t sold on him a few weeks ago, but he speaks in a way that DA never could and commands the respect of those he’s worked with.
