When we grade a pass rusher by sacks only, they tell us it’s bigger than sacks look at the pressures.

But if you grade an OL by pressures you’re told, it’s bigger than pressure look at the sacks.

Where's the consistency in the application of data?

Or, is pressures a better indicator of success for passrushers and sacks given up a better indicator of success for Offensive lineman?

When I played ball most of my coaches used a positive & negative rating system.
To me this is a better way to evaluate players.

If a pressure resulted in a negative play... a sack by another player, a tackle for a loss due to the ball being checked down, an interception because the QB was hurried into throwing it, a incomplete pass because the QB had to throw it away, when the defensive player brakes down the pocket & the QB has to scramble out of it, it would be a negative for the OL that was responsible for blocking that player or a positive for the D player. Usually after each game there was a review as well as a after season review.

The big problem with the pressures given to the OL, is the fact that it isn't always the person who is blocking the defensive player a given play was/is responsible for that block. Some OL will slide over & try to pick up a defensive pass rusher when he sees that there was a screw up in assignment & the defensive player is unblocked or about to break free...

The main problem that I have with pressures is that the first move an OT makes on a pass play is a backward move or leg kick...
His job is to drive the defensive player around the backside of the QB... OG & C don't fire out like they do on running plays. The wait to take on the rush from the DL or a blitizer...

If you are an OL on a pass first team you probably will have more pressures than an OL on a run first team...

Sacks plus QB hits are a hard stat...
Pressures are subjective...
