FA TE Foster Moreau visited Saints again to complete physical (Moreau and Saints agreed to a contract before lymphoma diagnosis per PFT) (2 Viewers)

So he isn’t a vested veteran (I believe he needs 5 years and he is only year 4). Does he have medical coverage since he isn’t on a team? Would the Saints signing him and placing on NFI allow him access to Saints medical staff and coverage?

In case anyone was wondering how well athletes can come back from Hodgkin's lymphoma, consider US Greco-Roman wrestler Jeff Blatnick. Blatnick was diagnosed in 1982. In 1984, he became the first American wrestler to win the heavyweight gold medal at the Summer Olympics.
Consider that Blatnick's lymphoma was caught later than Moreau's, and that treatment has likely advanced considerably in 40 years ( @sammymvpknight ?).

There are no guarantees, but Hodgkins is a more treatable cancer (though of course that’s relative). He’s also young and an elite athlete, which likely counts for something. I’m hopeful that he beats this and is in a Saints uni eventually

I know I am going be sound stone cold by writing this. I don't have a problem signing Moreau, but on the saints side, there is no need to sign him right now.

I will sign him once that he is not counted on the compensatory draft formula, and I will also wait until the draft. I will not be surprised if the saints take a tight end either Thursday or Friday. It is a very talented class and we should profit from it.

I could see the Saints going either way. I personally would love to see the Saints sign him because Moreau is a human being, and by all accounts a good one, and I’d hope that matters more than a compensatory draft pick. But I get your point, and this is a business and not a soup kitchen.

Sammy, I hated myself writing the previous message, but sometimes you have to have a cold head (and heart) before acting.

I really wish the best for him, and I would not mind signing him today. But my previous reflection stays the same.

Foster is the one former Raider that I wanted the Saints to sign after getting Carr. Local dude and he would be perfect to pair with Juwan. Hopefully he can get healthy and come back as soon as possible

But you are right. It didn’t come off as heartless. It is a cold reality.

I thought this when I first heard the diagnosis, I don't care if he never plays, he's an LSU guy, sign him regardless. Start him on the lowest contract that doesn't count in the top 50 whatever to take care of him. The good will alone is worth the money. Shows a class organization which we are. Then if he is able to play next year (or it sounds like this year perhaps) then increase his pay to what he is worth for the rest of the season or future years.
Good will goes a long way when future free agents think "will this team look out for me if something bad happens." Sort of like what we did for Alvin with his situation.

As a heme/onc fellow (and by further specialization I actually see only benign and malignant hematology at a major cancer center) his prognosis is exceedingly favorable. There are really only two aggressive lymphomas we love treating because the cure rate is so high, this and primary mediastinal b cell lymphoma.
