Its actually a pretty smart signing. He’s looking for a second chance, they have a need on the cheap. If he’s great for them, then they don’t have to draft a guy, if he’s terrible then they’ll likely have a high pick next year and get their choice of better QBs than this year.

I'd hardly call that a chance.

I’m not sure why you don’t apply the same reasoning to the Winston signing. Winston is a much better QB than Mariota or Trubisky and just signed a contract we can likely walk away from in 1 year.
