I need your help. I'm a HUGE fan of well written horror novels and good horror movies, but I feel like I'm running out of material. Maybe two or three decent horror movies come out a year. I haven't seen "Us" or the new "Pet Sematary" yet, so I have that. I love a good horror novel but they are pretty rare also, and I hate to invest all that time for something that is not worth it.

I think I've seen the best horror films of 2018 with Hereditary being my favorite.

I read A Head Full of Ghosts recently and enjoyed it.

Any suggestions? I could list what I've seen and read but it would take forever. Also I tend to favor supernatural work.

Shirley Jackson's Haunting of Hill House is phenomenal.

If you haven't read it, I recommend it. But it's understated and more psychological - but she handles tone and atmosphere in an understated way that is terrific and chilling. You could check out "The Lottery" as a short story to see if you dig her style before committing to an entire novel

but when you say "well written" it was the first title that jumped to mind - she's an absolutely terrific writer

edit: and the ending....!

I really enjoyed Suffer the Children by Craig DiLouie

The Lottery is my favorite short story. I read it as a kid and have never forgotten it.
This thread may have been stupid on my part because no one knows what I've read or watched.

well, if you liked that short story, have you read "The Rocking Horse Winner"? An eerie, strange, odd trip that - for some reason - reminds me of "The Lottery". Unfortunate fortune, e.g.

But, seriously, if you've not read Hill House - definitely recommend

I've read Hill House and I thought last year's Netflix Hill House was great(though I'm guessing some fans of the novel might find it blasphemous). I will try The Rocking Horse Winner. Thanks.

I loved that movie Young Frankenstein! Scared the hell out of me!

For anyone interested, "Pan's Labyrinth" is now on Netflix.
If you haven't seen it, my best description would be a Disney movie filmed in the depths of Hell.

have you read anything from scott sigler? The infected series is entertaining(not a zombie book...much worse) . A lot of well researched gore went in to this.

I just finished Earth core ( same author) loved it.

I googled Infected and it sounds interesting. Thank you for your post.
