Yes. The defense did end up being good after getting some great draft picks for the secondary. My criticism before that happened is that his playcalling was rigid. He has a very particular way he wants to call a defense, and he doesn't really modify it to fit the players he has. He'll slot a particular player in at a position, and if they start sinking he'll leave them in that position even if it appears the player would do better in a different position. My feelings on this seems to still exist with how Dennis misused Taylor and Baun.
He was tolerable as long as he stayed the DC and could maintain having elite players at cornerback, but the issues I had with his coaching style are magnified now that he's the head coach.
