I thought it was great when I first saw it but it hasn't aged very well for me.

I don't hate it, though. More of a "meh", now.

It does have some redeeming features. Like others have noted, the soundtrack and Gary Sinise are both awesome.

And for some reason, the whole "Bubba explains all the different ways to prepare shrimp" thing that takes place over the course of several rapidly cut scenes still cracks me up.

I could never make it through the whole book or the whole movie.

Oh, and the Bubba Gump shrimp restaurant offsets anything worthwhile this movie brings to the table.

I do love me some shrimp...<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/WhfK98f5S00&hl=en&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/WhfK98f5S00&hl=en&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

It's in my Top 5 favorites for sure!! Great Movie, extremely well made, great story, plot, and very well acted....

Outstanding movie.

Jenny is one of the top villains in movie history, and villain I hate the most.

I didn't think she was a villain more than she was an anti-hero (yes, there's a difference). She wasn't out to ruin him, because she did have compassion, but there was no way she could let him down to where he just left her. She gave him a goal that, without the explanation leading to its accomplishment, would have made this a 25-minute movie.

A villain would have said "I wish you never come back from Vietnam!" An antihero says "Don't do anything stupid, like get yourself killed."

It implies that "be nice" is all you need to be successful in life and devalues education and intelligence.

While I respect your opinion that it's not a good movie, your reasoning here is not very accurate. Not all successful people are intelligent, educated individuals. Some people ARE in the right place at the right time. Luck has a lot to do with success.

As for Hanks, he's OK as an actor. Better than some, not nearly as good as others.

One of the worst pieces of fluff propaganda anyone has ever made. It's incidious in it's stupidity. It implies that "be nice" is all you need to be successful in life and devalues education and intelligence.

i really think you're reading too much into it; the movie doesn't take itself nearly as seriously as you take it.
