Wow, someone went through and gave everyone who said they love it negative rep.

F that guy. I LOVE this movie.

One of the worst pieces of fluff propaganda anyone has ever made. It's incidious in it's stupidity. It implies that "be nice" is all you need to be successful in life and devalues education and intelligence. Beyond that, Tom Hanks makes any movie worse than it could have been and this one was going to be bad either way.

Maybe it wouldn't be so bad if people didn't keep quoting lines from it like they were sage advice. I mean, "stupid is as stupid does", what does that even mean? Stupid people act stupid. Really? I had no idea.

Is this really how you interpret it? Seriously? IMO, that is a gross misinterpretation of the message. The message is much more simple: Anyone can do or be anything. Just because your born with an initial lot in life does not mean you are destined to remain there.

And what is wrong with that message? I happen to be an example of this, considering my very humble beginnings.

How exactly does it devalue education? He does go to school, does he not? His Mom even sleeps with the principal to ensure he goes to a better school. :idunno: And what exactly is wrong with saying "intelligence is not everything"? Intelligence is not something you can exactly change about yourself. Sure you can learn more, but intelligence is more of a static characteristic; either you have it or you don't (or somewhere in between). I don't see the problem with the movie downplaying the role of IQ in a persons fate. :idunno:

Maybe "be nice" IS all you need to be successful if you define success as giving back something of which you have an excess. Too many people define success in the standard fashion--money, houses, cars, promotions etc.

Many people in this world can benefit more from a kind word now and then as opposed to material gifts. As a parent, I can tell you my son's "Daddy, I love you" at the end of a trying day will undo all of the crap endured to that point.

But, that's not the reality of our world and the movie implies that you can get by that way and that is simply not true.

It think it's unrealistic and more important detrimental to progress. It's exactly that thinking that has harmed our standing in the world and destroyed our economy. As far as education, how is it that he managed to get into those schools and into the University of Alabama? Obviously not based on skill. It was based on underhanded actions.

But, hey, if you want to love a movie that expresses the philosophical foundation of "the nanny state", more power to you.

Still, I can't be believe people get this worked up because someone doesn't like a movie and thinks it has a bad message.:idunno:

But it could be the reality of our world if enough people made it so :)

Speaking of stupid.....

Liked it a lot when it came out, but never loved it...now, it depends on what mood I'm in, ranging from apathetic to 'hey, I still like this a lot'.

If there was a "meh" option, I would have voted.

I guess you're going to stick with that. Nice job of making a personal insult to a fellow member over whether or not someone likes a stupid movie. Still, it does show that you are well acquainted with stupidity.:9:

By the way, have you read your own signature line?

I thought it was great when I first saw it but it hasn't aged very well for me.

I don't hate it, though. More of a "meh", now.

It does have some redeeming features. Like others have noted, the soundtrack and Gary Sinise are both awesome.

And for some reason, the whole "Bubba explains all the different ways to prepare shrimp" thing that takes place over the course of several rapidly cut scenes still cracks me up.

My thoughts as well

Can't abide the Gump.

Not-so-subtle message: It's better to be mentally lazy and not question the status quo.
Look at the fate of other characters in the movie who do vs. what happens to Forrest.

The movie has a very calculated feel to it. You can sense the film-makers hand trying to give you a reach-around every few minutes to distract you when you start to realize how
the movie is trying to manipulate your emotions.
