4. New Orleans Saints

The Saints haven’t found a QB to replace Drew Brees yet, and a combination of Jameis Winston, Taysom Hill, Trevor Siemian, Ian Book, and Andy Dalton hasn’t worked the past two seasons. The team also traded its 2023 first-round pick last season, so a young franchise QB isn’t walking through that door anytime soon.

There are some solid weapons in the offense, too. Alvin Kamara can be a top-three NFL back, and last year’s first-rounder, WR Chris Olave, looks like a star in the making. Plus, the NFC South might be the worst division in the NFL in a long time, and if it loses Tom Brady next season, it could be even worse.

With a wide-open division, offensive weapons, a solid defense, and a need at QB, the Saints are an excellent Derek Carr destination. This move may not make them a Super Bowl contender, but it could put them back in the playoffs next season.

I understand his contract is pretty high, but what else?
I just don’t feel he’s a top notch QB and I’m (foolishly) hoping we strike gold in the draft, next couple of seasons. I’m in the camp of blowing it all up, coaching too, and starting fresh. Think we need a young stud on a cheap rookie deal to get out of cap hell.

If we are going after Carr I’d much rather see what Jameis can do, healthy. I know that ship has sailed, just saying, as he’s signed thru next season as it stands now.

Mainly his bloated contract.

Coincidentally Allen is the coach who drafted Carr in 2014, so there is a small connection.

He is an accurate passer (if you look up the stats) , doesn't have Winston's injury history and threw less picks over his time with the Raiders, is younger than Dalton and more mobile than him, is a 3-time pro bowler from a team that was/is a dumpster fire-so I mean there are definitely some positives.

I think with a stable o-line, right OC drawing up plays, maybe another WR to replace MT (if he leaves) and a solid downhill bruising back, we could be on to something if we scoop him up.

At the end of the day, he could be a better fit vs. Dalton (who can be his backup) and Winston (who will probably bounce).

Again, the contract is the key in all of this. I'm not a contract guy, so I am not sure how/if we can afford him.

EDIT: I see that we wouldn't have to absorb his contract above, so that is a plus. We'd have to offer-up picks/trades I suppose.

Carr has a no trade clause in his contract, and will pocket 65 Million and likely the remaining contract will void if they cut him. He could just wait them out. In a trade he could just void the old contract and sign a new deal w/ a new team.

I think he's a modest improvement over Dalton. Carr is more dynamic, doesn't take the sacks like Dalton does. He's not Drew Brees or Patrick Mahomes, but if he could improve the offense's average PPG up by even 2-3 points, which I think he could, that's a difference between a 7- or 8-win season to a 9- or 10-win season.

Worth a shot, in my opinion.

From Carr's perspective, of those teams, I could see the Titans and Saints being the most attractive. I've said I think his relationship with Allen could favor the Saints, but both of those are weak divisions where solid QB play could make all the difference. The Jets and Commanders seem stuck in long cycles of disappointment and vying to just rise out of the cellar in tougher divisions.

It's tough. He is definitely -in my mind- a top 15-20 type QB, a gamer type that can make the throws but simply not one that can elevate a team on his own. A marked improvement on Dalton, though.

Would you want to pay him (on a new contract because nobody should be interested in trading for him under the current deal) and then not be able to upgrade much else of the roster and continue to be in 8-9 win limbo?? It might be worth it, given the org philosophy and the general weakness of the DIV/Conference...and it also gives us a better shot to really develop Olave and Shaheed. It's a difficult call.

His contract is too big ($33 million in 2023, $42 million in 2024, $41 million in 2025) and he'd cost a draft pick or two, this for a guy who is only a slight upgrade.

We'd be in the playoffs this year if Carr was our QB.

Carr has a no-trade clause so unless a team steps up that really wants him, even on his present deal, and he wants to be there, I think most people are looking at this from the expectation of his being released and signed as a free agent.
