Grupe (1 Viewer)

Darren Rizzi, special teams coordinator, gave a really intriguing interview preseason about their choice of Grupe over Lutz. It was long and detailed but the effect of it was, of all the metrics used to evaluate college kickers, FG %age is quite low in the hierarchy (because of issues with holding the kick, where the hash marks are, etc).

I was like you in terms of looking at raw data but it was a very persuasive analysis as to why that statistic of itself doesn’t carry much weight. I wish I could find the interview.

Coach Occam's Razor says.... make your kicks.
Rizzi sounds like "keep doing what you're doing."

Not quite ready to give up on him yet, he is still a rookie and can get better

Hope Springs Eternal

He's literally the only reliable way this team scores points. This is extremely wild that the fans are all scapegoating him.

He has lead the team in scoring since week 1

List the kickers in the entire history of the NFL who never missed a kick under 50 yards, who kicked for at least one full season in the NFL.

Never mind. I'll go ahead and list them for you here:

Thread Post Champion!

Hard to blame the guy when we are asking him to make 4-5 field goals a game. This offense needs to get better at scoring touchdowns and not rely on a rookie kicker to play perfect.

He's on pace to set Team Records for Most Attempts and Most FGs Made in a Season

It's a big indictment of our offense that Grupe leads the NFL in field goal attempts this season

He's gaining valuable experience early in his career

And if people want to compare him to Lutz, Lutz was not a reliable kicker his rookie year and missed kicks in close games for us (look it up if you don't believe me).

Be careful stating Facts. Some people refuse to believe them.

If Grupe is the biggest complaint you have, then you aren’t being honest with where this team really is right now. Our whole Offense is a way worse issue than Grupe.

There most certainly IS a thing that is low pressure situations. A potential game winning kick, is vastly different than a kick in a blow out game.

Kind of like the difference in pressure between walking a High Wire 1,000 feet up in the Air as opposed to walking a High Wire only 100 feet off the Ground. One is High Pressure and the other is Low Pressure.
Is that what you mean?

Grupe has great mechanics as a kicker. His leg kick produces a ball flight that is not only dead straight, but the ball elevates quickly and is far less likely to be blocked unless there is a complete breakdown in the line blocking.

Yes, he has had a few ‘pushed’ kicks that never started on a good line. But he’s not fighting a hook or a slice. We never have to worry that the ball is going to sail one way or the other with him having no idea which ‘drift’ he needs to compensate for. He knows that if he starts it on line, it’s going to be a good kick.

I still like the kid. His best days are still ahead of him.

Apples to oranges my guy.
Better analogy:
Try a high wire 1,000 ft off the ground to 10 ft off the ground. One is a matter of death and the other you can lick your wounds and walk away from

I stand by what I said. That young man was super automatic in preseason to already missing 4 out of 7 games.

Justin Tucker missed 6 kicks in 2022 and he missed 7 kicks in 2015.
He's the NFL All-Time leader having made 90.3% of his FG attempts in his career.

Graham Gano in his first full season missed 11 FGs, he then missed 10 the following year, he missed 6 in both 2014 and 2015, and he missed 8 in 2016. He's now I'm his 14th year.

Brett Maher now in his 5th season is currently 16 of 20 on FGs, having missed 4 through 6 games in 2023. He missed 7 in his Rookie season and he missed 10 FGs the following year.

The great Morten Andersen. HoF Saints kicker. I think we all agree 1 of the best. 13 years in NO. 77.6% kicks made. 50 yard attempts. 22 of 53 for 42%. Let's give Grupe a chance. He's not what's costing us games. Everyone looking for a scapegoat and he's the least of our worries. I like him. He will be fine.

In your analogy the 29 yarder he missed was "low pressure " because it was early in the Texans game when in fact had he made it and the 52 yarder he also missed, the Saints would have been playing for a FG to Win late in the game instead of having to score a touchdown. You counted that kick in the 4 he's missed.

Why? Because All Kicks Count. During the course of a career they are judged by their full body of work. When they are trying out as a replacement do you think that the G.M. discounts their history of misses or makes because they were "low pressure "?

You mean the guy who missed a PAT and a field goal in the one game he had a chance to help his team win this season? The guy who missed a field goal in a tie game with under two minutes left in our season finale last year? I will take a draft pick for a guy finished 32nd in the NFL in field goal accuracy every time. Don't tell me about what Lutz was in 2018-19. It's not 2018-19.

And also, if people are going to compare Grupe to Lutz, it's important to remember Lutz was a bottom-tier kicker his rookie year (did not finish in the top 20 for FG accuracy in 2016).
All of this. Something people want to ignore when trying to drag Grupe through the mud.

Even Lutz wasn't Lutz his rookie year and Grupe (so far) has still been better than he was in 2016.

Everyone is demanding Grupe immediately have 2018-2019 Lutz production while glossing over the fact that Lutz has been on a backwards slide since 2020. That's why they went with the young prospect.
Also, the fact that you have already missed 4 FGs in 7 games, is not a glowing review.
Lutz didn't have a very glowing review either his rookie season.

He also missed 4 FG in his first 7 games (11/15, 73.3%) and even went 4/7 (57.1%) in his first 2 games where we lost both by a combined 4 points because he had one FG blocked and returned for a TD where we lost 16-13 to the Giants.

Good thing Payton didn't cut him then because y'all wouldn't have anyone to be upset about trading away in favor of Grupe right now. 😂

He‘a 5’7” and 150 pounds. This is one of the top 32 place kickers in the country? 😂

Tucker has never missed a 20 yarder in his career.

Exactly. And I don't have anything against Lutz. He had a couple of good years for us and seems like a good dude. I just get annoyed when people hold Grupe to completely different standards than Lutz. And whatever Grupe's recent struggles, he's still not 32nd in the league in field goal accuracy, which is an improvement over Lutz's production last year.

Tucker missed an extra point at the end of the game to tie when Brees finally beat the Ravens.

Through 7 games Brett Maher is tied for the Most Fgs Made with 17. That's Good!

He has attempted the Most FGs, 23. His 73.9% is 4th Worst in the league. His 6 Misses is Tops in the league. In the Rams 24-17 loss yesterday to the Steelers he Missed 2 FGs and an Extra Point. That's 7 Points in a Single Game that they lost by 7 Points. He holds the NFL Record For Most consecutive missed extra points, having once Missed 5 in a Row. He holds the NFL Record For Most Consecutive Missed Extra Points in a Single Game and a Playoff Game when he Missed 4 in a Row. He Missed 7 FG attempts in his Rookie season and he Missed 10 in his 2nd year. His career average is only 79.9%.

With these numbers, and now in his 5th season, WHY is he still employed as an NFL Kicker? Because this job may be the hardest position in sports. There are only 32 of these jobs. Year in and year out, there aren't 40 professional kickers capable of successfully doing this job by NFL standards. They have the most pressure upon them of any player, every time they step onto the field.

More than likely at least one of the current 32 kickers will get Cut during the season this year. Brett Maher may be the first one to get cut. If he does, don't be surprised if he then replaces another cut or injured kicker later this year or makes another teams roster next year. That's The Life Of An NFL Kicker.

Brett Maher was released by the Rams today. He became the 1st Kicker to be cut during the 2023 Season.
