Yeah, but you'd think they could at least come close. I don't see any way that I could be more than 10 ranks better at Reach than zeetes. I mean, I don't see how I'm not at least 10 ranks lower than him. Of course, I'm juding this mostly on the K/D ratio. Did that not count significantly in Halo 2?
No, k/d ratio was never part of the old ranking system. It was strictly about wins, and where you finished compared to the other people in the game. Like, in a 8 man Team Slayer game, the guy who finished first on the winning team got ranked well. The guy who finished last on the losing team got ranked the lowest.
It weighted things depending on who you were playing. If you were a 40 playing against 35s and below, you couldn't gain any ground. You could hold ground by winning or lose ground by losing. Likewise if you were a 35 playing in a game with all 40s and above, you could only stay where you were if you lost or go up if you win.
It made people who were ranked high not want to play ranked stuff with lower ranked people, because all they could do was lose points. And once you'd played a lot of games, your number became very hard to move in either direction. It was always easier to move it lower though.
There are a lot of good reasons why they scrapped it. People who got stuck on higher ranks would decide to lose games purposely to de-rank. This did two things: 1) it allowed them to play against weaker competition and pwn them and 2)by causing a drastic change in your ranking, you made it more "moveable", so you could break through the ceiling you were stuck at. It always sucked playing with a de-ranker.
So while the old system had its goofiness, I still liked it better than now. I liked having a number next to my name that (allegedly) showed my skill. Arena doesn't seem to stroke the same warm and fuzzies.
