This isn't a marketing thing. It's been their official stance on the character for over a decade. It's just every time someone from Sanrio says it again everyone acts like it's somehow new information.

I know I never ran with the Hello Kitty crowds but I swear I could count on one hand how many times I've seen any merch or clothes out in the wild
