Much of that talk is "That's stupid!"
But there is talk
They don't need it. Hello Kitty is an utterly massive global brand. It does like $8 billion annually. They have like 50,000 separate licensed products.
This isn't a marketing thing. It's been their official stance on the character for over a decade. It's just every time someone from Sanrio says it again everyone acts like it's somehow new information.
