Speculation How would Klint Kubiak's passing scheme , match up w/ our personnel? Any experts? (1 Viewer)

Good stuff Rouxble! In YOUR opinion, what are the chances KK moves TH7 to that fullback/H-back role that I think he was born to play? TH7 needs to be on the field more, stressing defenses, IMO; but when he lines up in the backfield now, it's a telegraphed run. I'd like to see TH7 play that hybrid fullback/H-back role on the majority of snaps....sometimes handing off to him, sometimes sending out for a route, sometimes "checking down" in the flat, and sometimes just a decoy. Any chance (in YOUR opinion) KK deploys him in this way?

Referencing my earlier post that Rouxble responded to....anyone have thoughts on which 9ers (or possibly Bronco) players KK might recruit to implement his system and plug "holes" on our roster as it pertains to his system? 2nd tier guys who haven't got their shot yet, because starters are firmly entrenched in front of them? All speculation, of course!
Probably more H-back than fullback. Get him closer to his blocking target and/or give him opportunities to catch a defender by surprise. Lining him up as a receiver in a condensed split or as a wing TE can create similar blocking opportunities so we can keep defenses guessing.

I think I've mentioned this before, but I would love to see what Hill can do as a single back in 11 personnel. Seems like he his combo of speed and power would be a perfect change of pace to Kamara's quickness. More importantly, it would get him the same kinds of runs he gets out of QB Power but making it much less obvious that he's going to run the ball.

I think Kubiak is going to try using Hill in some of the same ways the 49ers use Kittle and Juszczyk. I don't know if it'll work, but I think he's going to give it a shot.

That's assuming of course Kubiak does end up the OC. It's not a done deal until the contract is signed and sometimes deals get undone even after the contract is signed.

He did pretty well lining up as an RB when we ran out of running backs in week two. I think he would also be a solid option for occasional WR screens because he would be a tough tackle for DB’s once he hits full speed..

This play comes to mind, he lines up as the RB in shotgun and then motions out wide to catch the screen. Runs through a DB tackle and picks up the first.

By the way, Underhill has an article that touches on some of this. I thin this is behind the pay wall, but FWIW, Nick is giving 20% off right now with the code motion:

He notes that the system will need blocking WRs and that it's less part of the West Coast system than what McVay does and what Carmichael/Payton do. The scheme attacks the edges of the defense which I take to mean it doesn't rely on crossing routes and slants, which conveniently Carr does not appear to do well and was bread and butter for MT. It also uses outside zone runs. So, it looks to devalue what a player about the be gone, MT, does well and a guy they are committed to, Carr, doesn't do well.

I think the idea of attacking the edges in the run game is you avoid the interior DL and MLB, really pressure the DEs to set the edge, and force smaller OLBs and CBs to make tackles. I think it's also why you need WRs who can at least block a bit to keep the LBs and safeties inside and block on the CBs who are forced into one on ones with RBs or WRs on screens and end arounds.

Blocking WRs are required in this offense and we have 2 that don't and I'm not sure about ATP. It will be interesting to see which skill position players are retained and who we bring in new via FA, trade or the draft.

I tend to think that run blocking by WRs is really more about the will to do it and being taught proper technique than anything else. Olave and Shaheed aren't good blockers now, but they can be taught if they have the will and they weren't really asked to do it much. Of course, some guys are better at it than others, but I think you figure out how to get them to block when guys have the abilities that Olave and Shaheed have.

On a side note, I thought it was obvious we were going to sign Renfro as a free agent this off season, but I'm not sure that he fits the new scheme. I'm not sure if he is a run blocker or not but I don't recall it being his thing.

After watching five Vikings games, it seems Kubiak shares Shanahan’s preference for 12/21 personnel sets on early downs, particularly when running the ball. If he wants to run that here, he will likely be evaluating Johnson, Hill, and Prentice to see if they can be effective as the fifth skill player in his base run offense. Financial commitments to Johnson and Hill will likely put them on the field before we go shopping for replacements, but we can line them up in ways to give them easier blocking assignments and also benefit from any mismatches they find on those times we pass.

In those games, Kubiak ran 63% of the time with <3 WR on early downs and passed 83% of the time with 3+ WR.
The thing is 21 was KK's 1st full season as OC , His only playcalling experience prior to that was pre-season. That was 2yrs ago and I'm sure a learning experience just like ant 1st time OC. So what you are seeing in that 21 season may very well not be all we'll see from KK's play calling. PLUS having old school Zimmer as HC must have influenced KK's play calling
