Speculation How would Klint Kubiak's passing scheme , match up w/ our personnel? Any experts? (1 Viewer)

We hopefully they will find a legit LT draft/FA, and not try to force feed us Penning at RT. IF Ram doesn't prove effective any longer.
“Force feed”??? DA is fighting for his head coaching life… I really doubt he will force anything that he doesn’t think will help. I actually think they tried to “force feed” Penning last season.

I get the idea that we have to be prepared in event that Penning doesn’t develop but I just don’t get this fan thing where players are 100% what they are when they’re drafted.

Humans grow, develop, evolve… Penning is an amazing athlete from a tiny school, very little mechanical development, missed his entire rookie season, then the entire offseason and then became the starter. There is absolutely still a chance that he becomes a solid player. If he doesn’t take a huge jump this offseason, THEN, I’m ready to give up cuz all the excuses will be gone.

Now, am I gambling on Penning being the starter? Absolutely not… I want a good back up plan but I’m not just guna discard all that potential with all those circumstances negatively effecting him.

My plan would be to keep Peat at LT in hopes that Penning develops and is ready to take over. If it doesn’t work out, you have decent LT play for 2024 and I’ll be looking for a LT for 25z

We don't really get any Niner's games here in NOLA. So, I mostly just get their highlights. I'm sure his hire, would change our draft and FA options. Any insights?
Hopefully less sideline passes or 3rd and 7 and Carr throws 2 yard pass to crossing receiver, hoping he makes a first down.

I can understand the concern, even Underhill said Carr tends to struggle in his first year in a new system (as most QB’s likely do). Carr will need to check his ego at the door to be successful, his preference is to get to the line and make all his checks like the greats have done, but the Shanahan system is “run the play as called.” He complained about being forced to follow McDaniels’ plays as called, and Kubiak will likely expect him to do it as well.

They will have backup play calls for specific looks, but he’s likely not going to the line with a wide menu of options. Carr probably found comfort in checking to certain concepts against certain looks, or even throwing alerts when he felt pressured. That just makes the play caller’s job harder, he would prefer to keep showing the same look until the defense adjusts so that the constraint play can be called in response.

I think @Saint Spud said Kubiak has a reputation for hammering what works, that definitely applies to what I said above.
Yep, exactly that. I feel Carr doesn’t like to be boxed in, as he feels it makes him vulnerable (I suspect). For example, what if the plan B call, is snuffed out. Then Carr is taking a sack or feeling boxed In and uncomfortable. I think he likes the ability to ad lib when plan A isn’t there. That way he can blame the play caller. (Im not saying that to enforce the false narrative that he’s not accountable, that narrative is ridiculous). However, on a positive note, im hoping that KKs system is more Carr friendly to his throws he’s good at compared to J MCD’s system. But I don’t know that for sure. I agree, he does need to check his ego, for sure. Also the command structure may be more comfortable for Carr. J MCd was the head coach, so maybe Carr was pressing to impress. Just a thought.

I just hope that we don’t substitute on every play. Hopefully his thought is to have his best players on the field for the game.

Now nine games in, here are my observations:
  • If there was any pre-snap movement, it was generally more shifts than motion. The Vikings were average in their use of motion in 2021 (keep in mind we were way below average). It varied by game, but it seemed like there were stretches of drives with zero motion.
  • The RB/TE screen game looks much better than what we put on the field this year. The receivers have room to run with blockers in front.
  • The Vikings used WR screens and quick throws to the outside receiver at a high rate. Rarely big gainers, but they kept the chains moving. The quick throws were paired with zone run looks going in the opposite direction, freezing the box defenders and giving the WR room to operate.
  • They also threw a lot of fades, if you challenged JJ 1v1 they were going to let it fly. I would expect the same for Carr-Olave.
  • The drop back pass game doesn’t look considerably different than what I’ve seen from us, not a ton of motion and big on timing.
  • They definitely get more chunk gains in the zone running game, but it’s somewhat boom and bust. The Vikings had the highest rates of runs stuffed (didn’t get past the LOS) in 2021, but they were also among the league’s best in second level yards (5-10 yards) and open field yards (11+ yards). The potential for those bigger gains probably helped boost their PA game.
  • They ran a lot more play action that what you saw this year. A lot of UC looks. Plenty of FB usage with I formation looks. Prentice (or some other FB) will likely find a place on the field. Shanahan and McDaniel both make heavy usage of a FB as well.
So my question to you is, Zimmer was the long time entrenched HC in 21. Zimmer is well known to be an old school 3yrds and a cloud of dust HC . Do you think that Zimmer was in 1st yr OC KK's ear on what he wanted called and when? . 21 may not be as telling on what KK wanted to do as OC. It may be hard to tell when he called plays in Den for those games because it was Hackett's offense. . Either way it's going to be an interesting season

I really hope that the reliance on fades in Minnesota was because Jefferson and/or Cousins were very good at that route/throw. It's such a low percentage throw normally and Carr has shown to not be very good on that throw. One of the things that frustrated me about PC is he kept calling fades that didn't seem to be close to being completed.

As far as FB, i'm really wondering if they won't look for a more versatile FB than Prentice. Not sure if it was scheme or a talent issue, but he never seemed much involved beyond blocking. (Well and the one fumble that killed us.)
I think the lack of success on fades early in the yr was chemistry with the receivers, because we got pretty good at in toward the end of the yr

The offense doesn’t seem overly conservative, most of what I’ve been watching are the types of formations and calls (which run/pass concepts) he seems to prefer and the way he tries to run constraints. I’m sure Zimmer was in his ear but he’ll have a defensive-minded HC here.

I don’t plan to watch the Broncos games, to your point he was picking up someone else’s bad offense mid season. At least with the Vikings you know he installed that offense from day one, and I doubt Zimmer was putting his foot down on the specific concepts Kubiak was allowed to use.

Good stuff Rouxble! In YOUR opinion, what are the chances KK moves TH7 to that fullback/H-back role that I think he was born to play? TH7 needs to be on the field more, stressing defenses, IMO; but when he lines up in the backfield now, it's a telegraphed run. I'd like to see TH7 play that hybrid fullback/H-back role on the majority of snaps....sometimes handing off to him, sometimes sending out for a route, sometimes "checking down" in the flat, and sometimes just a decoy. Any chance (in YOUR opinion) KK deploys him in this way?

Referencing my earlier post that Rouxble responded to....anyone have thoughts on which 9ers (or possibly Bronco) players KK might recruit to implement his system and plug "holes" on our roster as it pertains to his system? 2nd tier guys who haven't got their shot yet, because starters are firmly entrenched in front of them? All speculation, of course!
Within a day or 2 of this post, this little gem shows up on the main page of SR.com. Absolutely perfect....exactly what I wanted to know. I could get excited about 2-3 of these guys....of which, NONE should be too expensive, IMO. Not gonna re-shape the roster with any of these guys, but may help expedite with assimilation of his system and you just never know who's about to break out when given increased opportunity?!

It got better when Carr got hot late in the year, but according to Underhill it's a low percentage pass play to begin with and Carr has been well below league average in completing it during his career. Maybe he has turned a corner on that throw but it seems unlikely after 9 years.

I wonder how much what he installs will change after his year working with Shanahan? Hopefully he learned some tweaks to make a solid to good scheme into a very good one.

I really hope they sign Ray-Ray McCloud. I have no idea if he is good or not, but I would feel better about the team is we had a Ray-Ray on the roster.

I like the idea of a niners coach. They seem to take advantage of players strengths and have gotten players with unique talents to excel. Two things we desperately needed last year.
Yeah, and now we just need a Debo and McCaffrey lol

I think that’s where I’m headed, comparing 2021 Vikings to 2023 49ers to 2023 Saints. What’s new from Minnesota to San Francisco, and how do they both compare to what we did last year.
